Red, purple, and maroon paints (and colored glass) all have a bit of gold in them to kill their tendency otherwise to come out muddy. Hence the higher price for these colors, regardless of the paint type.

What are prices on the new water-borne paints?

I don't think it's just that PPG wants to quit making enamels and lacquers, it's the EPA with their boot on their necks over VOC's.

Three letters explain the cost - EPA.

I opened a body shop in 1976 and used to paint VWs for $300. including labor and made a small profit. I just restored a 1939 Pickup and paid $248 for a gal of dark green. Reducers, hardener sanding and prep supplies were extra

All this stuff about price is great info. However, if you are trying to match an original Ford color and save some dinero, what is the best route?

This was posted in another paint thread a while back (2010) by Karl Wesott:

Default Re: What is Urethane paint
*SAFETY WARNING*

Urethane paint is great stuff as mentioned above BUT!

All urethanes contain isocyanates, which are a really nasty bad stuff. They are what is called a sentensizing allerigin. Each time you (or someone around you) gets exposed they may or may not become allergic. When allergic some nasty respiratory things, and skin things can happen.

The important thing is to use the proper safety gear when spraying. This means a full suit with supplied air. NO SKIN, NO FILTER MASK. This also means a spray booth with proper filters. If you spray outside and your neighbor gets sick where are you going to be.

Sorry to throw water on the parade but if we wish to keep our hobby we have to be responsible.

Polyurethane is dangerous stuff if adequate precautions are not taken.

So what are some of the symptoms of a reaction to using this paint? Other than the severe reactions I have read about other places, I can not find any info on what some of the first indications of overexposure are and how they manifest themselves.

Lots of cheap paints out there, but cheap rarely means good quality. Just depends what your standards are.....
High quality and durability at a low price, no. You really do get what you pay for.

I am not trying to win any contests with this, but I recently bought two quarts of a Dupont single stage (yellow) that cost $580 for the two quarts. I just thought red was expensive. I have an account with the local paint supplier or it would have been more. FOr a lower price good quality single stage, NASON is really a good product.

Most of, if not all, of the major paint companies have a value line they offer if you ask. You don't always have to use the premium line to get good results, especially on solid colors. I use the Nason brand of products for less than half the cost of Dupont and am well satisfied with the results. Some colors do need to be done in the high end material. It's the only way to get the full richness brought out, tri coats especially.

Recently did a drive / show car in PPG products - total materials right at $1K for primers, color and clear. Beautiful result after 1,500 / 2,000 / 4,000 / color sand then buff w/ 3M products. This approach is only for those who exceed the anal retentive measurement scale.
Did the '51 pickup in Sikkens single stage acrylic for a quarter the price with great results. I use the truck like a truck. Will color sand / buff one day...

I used Sikkens on a '40 Coupe and it worked well. The paint store said it covers better than other brands so less paint is needed. My painter confirmed that. Will use again.

It used to be that 3 qts = 1 gal in price, now 2 qts = about 80% of the gal. price. I had a 1/2 pint of Delstar mixed for a spray out ( 1qt was $164); it was Deepwater Blue , a 67 GM color. $1000 is not a deal, but I can see how you can get near there. I started using HVLP guns a few years back I figure it saves maybe 20/25% in volume. As suggested, I'd price out Shopline base/clear that should cut your color volume to less than a gallon. JMO

I have painted cars for over 40 years and can say without a doubt you get what you pay for . example.... ppg Shop Line has half the pigment as there high end paint colors have. It takes twice as much Shop Line to cover what there top line paint products will cover..
3 coats top grade or 6 coats Shop Line ..this was my experience with Shop Line bc /cc red... IE.. Shop Line cost 1/2 as much but took twice the paint .You do the math, also 6 coats will add mill thickness to the paint job and will chip twice as easy ..A true life experience.......

I just painted my truck at home in the driveway, total cost for everything was about $600. That includes Featherfill primer, 2 colors of Urethane single stage, in kit form, and because I have never painted a car before, I had runs, orange peel, dry spray, somewhat of a mess, I fixed all that easily by clear coating over the whole thing, looks great! Single Stage is a one shot deal, but you can wet sand it down like base coat and fix it. I bought a full face double filter mask, but it was just barely enough protection. Beware and be Careful!! The paint I got was from TCP Global, it is really good stuff! Cheap too!

I looked at the price difference of Shopline and Premium PPG what a difference. Used Shopline through out but used Premium for top coat for the sealer. Paint is outragously priced Paid damned near 200 a gallon. Used PPG 4000 for top coat with a base/clear finish. Doing the job myself it cost about 3 grand.

Get this....I painted a fellows car a couple years ago, just the gallon of basecoat cost $3900. Total materials were around $6k. He never batted an eye at the price. Some people have too much money......
