Dave,
I have my gasket material that was under the tank. It is just not in great shape. If you want to just take a picture or two of it that might help too?
Regards,
Chris

That black crude is unusual. What's the condition of the inside of the gas tank? It must not be too bad given the amount of driving you have already done without mention of a clogged fuel pump and/or carburetor.
David,
The inside of the tank looks pretty good, kind of a yellow color. The large vent tube was the one that was plugged, an ideal place for mud dauber types to get in and build a nest.

Chris

A photo of the tank gasket material would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Folks,
Some pictures from yesterday in the shop.
Not a great picture of the gasket that was under the tank. Its a webbing for sure maybe impregnated with tar ?? I assume oil and or gas resistant.

Parts of the dash gage, I will needs to make/get a new gasket for the lens:

Speedometor cable

Not sure the GAV and the vacuume line ar supposed to go through the same hole as the speedometor cable? ( cable was put through there too. with rubber gromet added.

Humm cab has settled into frame:

Chris

I have my gas tank gasket on a slab of cardboard high up on a shelf. I can't get up on a latter at the moment as I have an ailing ankle. It should clear up and when it does I'll get it down and take some carefully measurements and close-up pictures. Yours seems very much like what I have in my '35 truck.
I recall thinking that it looked like a tar-impregnated woven cloth material somewhat like, but much thicker than anti-squeak webbing.

Chris,

My firewall has speedo, choke and vac line through the same penetration.

Apologies in advance for the coil attachment - its embarrassing when bailing wire is actually used !

There were originally four components that passed through that grommetted hole in the firewall, namely the choke cable, the vacuum line for the windshield wiper motor, the speedometer cable, and the air line for the fuel gauge. (Page 5-20 from the book)

Rory, David,
Thanks for the firewall pictures! Ok I was not going to take out the GAV cable and the vacuume line to get the threaded portion of the speedometor cable through. So as usual I took matters into my own hands and provided just a skoosh mor room in stragic areas for those items.
I guess the threads are booggerd up good on the back of my speedometor.Had a terrible time getting the threaded nut close to tightening up. 90 year old stuff. You have to keep your expectations real low.
Looking forward to see if it does work. Robert R says they were pretty bounce when functioning?

A bouncing speedometer needle is not normal, but rather a sign that the cable is in need of lubrication.

While I haven't done so in years, after a long day at the office, I used to fall asleep while working underneath one of my old cars.

Folks,
I recieved the kit from Straight-Eight with the dye, tubing, nuts and ferrels. One of the nuts fits perfect on the dash gage. But the tank unit is larger. Also got the wrong gasket for the tank unit. (my fault).

I did find a nut in the vast warehouse that fit the larger thread. Which seems to be .365 dia with 24 pitch. Havent located that size yet. A note in there doucmentation says that larger nuts for big trucks are not avialbe. May have to make something or get one machined?

Regards,
Chris

For '32s, it's not just the big trucks that have an in-cab tank and that gauge sending unit, but also most of the 106" wheelbase commercial vehicles (pickups, panel deliveries, and station wagons.) use the same components.

The nut for the gas level sender air line on the bottom of the tank should be the same for all Ford Trucks 1932-1936. Give me another day and I should be able to get into the garage and send you pictures and the nut size.
Also, the six washers used in mounting the level sender to the tank are special copper washers. I believe these were used to provide a positive seal on the threads. These washers even have a Ford part number: BB-9307 When you get the gasket, be sure to get the washers too.

David,
Just have to find or make the larger nut/holder, which at first cut, seems to be a odd ball item in size and shape and features for sure. Google search for that thread size has not come up with a match. I may be missing something?
Regards,
Chris

BB-9307 washers are like miniature versions of some spark plug gaskets of the period, not only copper, but asbestos wrapped in copper.

Dave, David,
Thanks for the heads up on the special washers. I will see about getting a set of those also.
Dave, take care of yourself. Not very urgent on this end.
Regards,
Chris

thanks Chris. I'm frustrated sitting on my waiting for my ankle swelling to go down. I'm much more a hands on guy and not prone to being confined to being immobile but following orders

Dave,
I completely understand. Having gone through some very minor mobility issues in 2017, i can somewhat relate. I plan to talk with the folks at Straight today about some of these details too, like the BB-9307 sealing washers.
Let that ankle heal stay off of it! What is the status of your book? I know a guy in Wyoming that would like to secure a copy of that.
Regards,
Chris

Good luck with the washers. If you find a source, let me know as I might need to replace mine too.
The book is almost done. I had planned to finish it before Christmas, but I haven't been able to work on it all all for all this week. Just have final layout, fixing pictures (hundreds) and some cleanup work do to. I never appreciated how much work it takes to create a book. It's still going to come out by Spring 2023. The print run is 500, so there should be enough to go around but it's hard to know. It's better to order one now and wait a bit than be disappointed later. I don't know if the EFV8 club would print a second run.
