48 Ford how much play on rear driveshaft yoke

I have a 48 Ford that converted to open driveshaft. How much play up and down on the yoke, Thanks Steve

Steve ..... Let's see if I understand your question. Are you talking about grabbing the yoke and physically moving the yoke (and the pinion shaft) literally up & down in relation to the banjo housing? If that's what you're asking, and that's what it's actually doing, that's bad news! That shouldn't have any up & down play.

Lock nuts have probably worked loose. There is a specific tightening method for these. They need to be not too tight in clamping down, but tightly locked together.

Your OPEN DRIVE should look like this first picture. Once you remove the SIX BOLTS and the cover where the pinion goes into the banjo housing, you should see the two lock nuts as seen in the 2nd picture below.





The two lock nuts seen in this picture. They lock against each other with a French lock between the two nuts.

You should have NO play up and down or in and out.

Drag should be something like 1.7 in # I thought, rather than toggle something up I elected to do it by “ feels good” that is enclosed, but same thing. If it feels gritty, I would pull it out & change cup & cones. Really not good if bearings spun & wallowed out housing.

Really not good if pinion was able to move up & down and left & right while driving against the ring gear and totally eating the ring gear up! Ring and pinion are probably junk.
