Default 47 Merc- how do you adjust the hood hinges

I've got a friend who has a 47 Merc and has been having trouble adjusting the hood so it will sit down in the closed position. I think it's the 4 cowl bolts that hold the hinges where he's having the problem.
Is there a procedure for getting them right or is it just trial and error?

Thanks

Bolts, if you can get a copy of the May/June 2009 issue of the V-8 Times there is an article on how to do it. It's very informative and I did mine using it. If you can't get one PM me and I will copy it for you and send it by mail.

The hinges adjust oppisite to what you would think.Move the hinge down raises the hood, raising the hinge lowers the hood.Foward and back moves hood foward and back.A real pain to adjust the hood ,requires patience and a bad vocabulary. Phil

I tried everything on my 47 Sedan hood, including everything in the article, and it still wouldn't sit down tight. I took the springs off and it sat down just fine. I concluded that the bolts and/or holes at the moving points on my hood hinge were too worn to pull the hood down tight no matter how the hinge was set. Rather than replace all of that I use a stick to hold the hood up and put some weak springs that do nothing in place of the stock ones just for looks. Works for me.

Bolts,
Could you also send instructions on adjusting hood. I have a 48 Ford Conv. Took hood off to do valve job and can't get it to fit good. Thanks

I had to do this recently. My car didn't have the brackets when I bought it. I have a PDF version of the article on how to do it. As of now, it lines up but not perfectly. I still have some more adjusting too do.

I always took a sharp scribe and marked the location before removing the hood. Re-installation was just lining it up with the marks. Sometime adjustment was necessary and patience and trial and error was the key. It always came out looking good.

Does anyone know if the 46-48 Mercury hood hinges are the same as the Ford of the same year? The car I bought was disassembled and missing the hinges.

I had sort of the same problem on my '41. Hood sat on cowl fine but the sides spread out. After yrs of messing around, I removed the springs and bingo, perfect fit and this was after NOS hinges and multiple adjusting sessions
