Another question that will get me in trouble with the purists!
I'm sorry to ask, but I have a chance to buy a chrome 30 radiator shell for my 29 at a great price. The one on now is painted. I know the shells are a little different, but are the dimensions essentially the same? Would there be any issues swapping them? I know it won't be period correct, but it is a good looking shell.

I think there is a big difference between the 29's and the 30 hood for example.

The 1930 is of Stainless Steel. It is taller than the 28-29's. Fitting will be a definite challenge and not recommended. You can buy a new 1929 chrome shell for about $150.00 from your local dealer. They fit well. Good luck with your decision. NORTHEASTVIC

The 30 & 31 are interchangeable; the 28 & 29 are interchangeable, but never the twain shall meet. Further, the 30's differ in apperance from the 31's but they will cross fit.

Believe the '30-'31 Radiator and shell are about 3 inches taller than '28-'29...
Sounds like a hassle-sandwich... |

Quote:
Some AA shells in '30-'31 were not only painted black, but also lacked the characteristic "widows' peak" at the upper part of the shell, and just went straight-across. |

Re: Another question that will get me in trouble with the purists!
The reproduction shells are not that great. The flanged hole that surrounds the radiator cap threads is at a fairly large angle off horizontal. When the cap is in place, there is a gap in front that shows too many threads. I bought one for my 29 Roadster and sent it back for one that was only slightly better. You can grind or cut this to make it level I suppose, but why should you? Something to look out for.

Please don't worry about us purists. Once you get to know us you'll find out that we're not that bad.

Re: Another question that will get me in trouble with the purists!
The 28 and 29 Cowl is very different from the Cowl on a 30 or 31, because of the radiator and shell size being different. I think the hood is different also.

Re: Another question that will get me in trouble with the purists!
I know very little about this, but weren't some cars also considered "commercial"? If so, I understand that the radiator shells on them were painted, but not necessarily black. Can anyone please elaborate on this?
