A power supply with a big rheostat to adjust voltage would work but the components can get expensive.

You can call the folks @ Fun Projects and they can give you an estimated delivery date. They told me 3 weeks so I put in my order and it was just short of 3 weeks when I got it.

I think I'll try the original stock unit and see how it goes. I can tinker with the output. I ordered the bearings, brushes, terminal post kit, insulators etc.,.

The Fun Projects voltage regulators are not out of stock....although their website says so. I have recently bought 2 from them - the most recent 10 days ago.

It'll probably run for your lifetime.

It may last a while but the original cut out won't give voltage regulation !!! Voltage regulation is a great improvement for the model A . No harm meant .

None taken. Just wondering what’s best to replace original cut out with if mine doesn’t work. I appreciate all the responses.

I use the Fun Projects can style voltage regulator . John Regan , the man that produces the Fun Projects voltage regulator told me that it would be OK to set the adjustable brush in the generator for a maximum charge rate of 10 amps for brighter headlamps . The regulator will allow the charge rate to fluctuate like modern cars and prevent overcharging problems . When using the original unmodified generator , the headlamps won't be as bright as modern cars but will be an improvement over just using an original cut out . I use the 12 volt version of the Fun Projects voltage regulator and it works great on an unmodified generator . Toms internal voltage regulator is only available in a 6 volt version .

Fun Projects still has a few EVRs in stock. I just received one from them about 10 days ago.

Original cutouts are one of the most durable original parts on the car. Unless you are of the ilk that has to change or upgrade I suggest staying with the cutout. Sure you can remove the cover, check for a problem, clean the points, and keep going. Replacement cutouts are junk and when you turn one upside down and look at the pattern on the base you will quickly be able to spot original from replacement. C utouts were used until 1939 and the V8 ones are almost like the Model A ones but they mount with mounting screw holes as opposed to mounting screw slots. They do interchange. When you shut off the engine just get in the habit of eyeballing the ammeter to see if it shows a large discharge. If it does (with headlights off) just tap the cutout and usually that is sufficient for the points to open. If it sticks often then do what you are doing, remove the cover and look for the problem.I like the Model A for what it is, not as a challenge to update.

That’s kind of how I feel. I think mine is a replacement. It has a B stamped on cover with the Ford script and holes instead of slots on base.

Yep, that is a later cutout. As others have said, still functionally the same.

The cutout with the capital B is a V8 cutout and is genuine Ford original equipment, and It will do the job for you. I am not at home as I write this, but if I were at home I could tell you exactly the time period the B cutout was original equipment.

The cut out is the OEM failsafe for the generator. Most folks, even back in the day, didn't mess with the 3rd brush all that much but some learned to adjust for extended night time driving but a person had to remember to adjust the amperage back down to keep from boiling all the water out of the battery electrolyte.

The fun projects unit will adjust the charge level automatically so a person will have a generator that works a lot less and a happy battery that keeps its water plus it acts as a diode to prevent motoring after shut down. The cut out is only an automatic on/off switch for the generator. The generator charges at whatever the 3rd brush is adjusted to all the time. There is no rest for the weary in that situation.

I ordered and received a Fun Projects EVR several weeks ago. Even though their website says out of stock, they apparently still have a few.
