Default Carb back fire

Took the car out for a ride today and noticed if you decelerate rapidly it slightly back fires threw the carb. If I back off on the timing some its worse. Also playing with the GAF made no change. Is this indicative of a possible timing adjustment needs to be done? This is one thing I have not looked at yet.

If the car has been sitting and was fine prior to layup, several things need checking. First do a compression check that will either eliminate or prove if a valve is bad or hanging up. After that if you find no problems I would check the distributor, cap wires, plugs for possible problems. An overly lean carb mixture could cause a backfire. Just places to start IMHO report back. The points may have closed up due to wear on the rubbing block. Reset them to .020.

are you sure its the carb and not the exhaust
how did you determine that?
noises travel, your other noise that you thought was in the back of the car turned out to be the manifold heater..
ill bet its popping out the exhaust pipe or from an exhaust leak, thats more common on decel than out the carb

Well you might be right on when I reved the car and the floor was out I could see a small hole with red fire inside right where the exhaust manifold meets the exhaust pipe. Is there a donut in that connection? How is it suppose to be sealed?

can you post a pic of where you saw the flame...no there is no gasket originally but many methods are used for sealing that area along with a new flange clamp.. personally i use this insert sleeve with a new clamp

This is not the best pic and is the front but I saw the fire where the clamp comes together on the back side. I don't think its a very good seal. Your pic shows a key switch.

its a somewhat debatable topic some guys use cement muck and other things.. kinda like which oil to use...
if it were my job i would buy a new powdercoated clamp with brass nuts and the sleeve i posted above. no other goop is needed. this will compensate for flange issues manifold droop etc,,,.. the clamp has a top and bottom as the top that fits around the manifold has a larger inside radius so watch out for that...

seal not needed junk
just sleeve and clamp

i once tried to use the seal/ gasket and ended up throwing it as far as i could... i have since utilized the 2 pieces on countless cars

Did you have to modify or cut the sleeve or did it just slip in fine?

Got the flange and sleeve kit and installed it yesterday, this is a nice tight fix now. Come to find out the old clamp was ready to break off due to being rusted out. The sleeve sealed it up real nice.

Better than a donut any day. I did have to grind a burr out up inside the manifold to get the sleeve in all the way, no big deal. My little dremel tool with extender saved the day again.
