Default 6 volt alternator

Anybody using a 6 volt alternator? If so is it one that looks like the generator? Are they positive ground? Are they worth the effort(money)?

Get an alternator from [email protected]

It is a one-wire setup that I put on my '52 F1 6 years ago and I love it!!

I've had one of Ed Whitney's 6v positive ground generator-to-alternator conversions for seven years or so. Whether it's worth the price is in my opinion a personal decision, but I'm happy with mine.

I have one on my 35 PU. single wire, 6V positive ground. Works great without problems. Can't remember the guys name but he mounts it on an early V8 generator front plate and it goes on just like the generator did. He is always at Hershey and I believe at Charlotte.

Dave I put one on my '40 Sedan last year and it really works great. I used a conversion bracket to mount it and it fit perfect. My car has been converted to negative ground.

Dave, I have a 6 volt, negative ground single wire alternator in my "39. I got it about 10 years ago from Fifth Ave. Autoparts in Clay Center KS. Changing to neg.ground was a snap and my amp gauge never knew the difference. Matched up with an Optima battery in a Ford script case, we never worry about "will it start?" after breakfast at our favorite diner!! On the other hand, if yours is a show car, not sure what you do because this is an alternator that looks like an altenator!!

Dick.

If your fan is mounted on your GEN. now you can have L.D. BECKER in OHIO. mount an alt. on the front generator plate. I am told that mounting the fan directly on the alt. will wipe out the bearings in the alt in no time.THIS NOT FOR A SHOW CAR. SUNSHINE

When mounting fan on alternator, do the
blades on the fan have to be shortened?

You can buy a kit for about 35dollars to convert your alt to 6 volt pos or neg ground. Look on internet.

No. I tried them several years ago, but could never get them aligned properly. Seemed like there was always a big dark area right in front of the car, so I went back to conventional sealed beams.

Becker is the guy who did mine. He mounts the fan on the Alternator and uses an early Ford generator front plate which has a heavy bearing to support the fan. About $100.00 and you furnish the front plate. The one with the round holes, I think, but you should check with him first. Works great.

Hi Lawson, Could you please post a picture of your setup done by Becker ? I guess my question is does he use the generator case like Ed Whitney. I have a 34 intake which is higher in front & a regular alternator will not fit as the fan would be to high. Thanks in advance.
Gary.

No, he just mounts the alternator on the Ford front plate. If you use a 39 intake you will have no trouble with fan clearance. My computer crashed a couple of months ago and I lost most of my pictures. I'll see if I can come up with something.
