Bore scope?

Hey Guys,
Has anyone had any experience with a bore scope that will fit into the cylinder head spark plug hole to view the position of the cylinder head?

I use an electronic one that has a small viewing screen on the hand control. It has fairly good resolution and several viewing angles. They are available from a lot of sources but I haven't priced them recently. The better the resolution and more than one viewing angle, the more a person will use it. Some are made to work with an iPhone or Android but I've not used one. They tend to be the least expensive types.

The flathead doesn't have a lot of room around the spark plug boss to get them in there. The camera end needs to be small enough to go through there.

Yea, getting the camera to make the turn from vertical to horizontal will be essential. I tried one that was supposed to work with my telephone. It didn’t.
With the ones I’m looking at now, the camera part at the end of the cord appears to be too long and rigid to maneuver through the plug boss and into the combustion chamber.

Can you clarify what you mean by position of the cylinder head?

Try teslong , at Amazon. Get the one for 22 cal rifles . Comes with mirrors and has a very close focus . I haven’t tried on the flathead yet but it’ll spot copper deposits on a 22 cal barrel . Did I say it’s very thin and flexible . They do make a semi rigid one , make sure to order the flexible.

Mine is just less than 0.22" but the tip is about 1.5" and it doesn't flex.

I bought a Teslong on Amazon and it works great on my FE engines. I mainly used it to check cylinder wall and valve condition when I thought I had a water issue. There's no way it'd make the turn in a flathead combustion chamber, but it does have a side angle camera that's incorporated into it, so it may be possible to get a decent view of the cylinder head placement through the side view. Now you've got me wondering if it'd work. Maybe I'll pop a plug out tomorrow and see how it does.

The one I’m talking about has a camera and cable .170 with mirrors . The mirrors make it about .20 . I’m pretty sure it will NOT make the turn but you’ll get some pics with the mirrors on . I use fiber optic micro filaments for extra light in other applications.

I got one of these from Amazon a few years ago. It might be small enough to fit in the spark plug hole & turn in to the cylinder bore.

The best borescope for a flathead.

I took these recently with a little unit that plugs into my phone. I can change the intensity of the light and take photos or videos. Was a gift from son-in-law who is a car guy.

That's great. What is the brand/model of the scope?

For a good one that works great and is super easy to use is the Depstech brand available on Amazon for $40 to 50 depending on model. They work wireless with your phone for viewing. The IP67 series is 8.5 mm and come with a right angle mirror, magnet tip and hook for retrieving stuff. Other models are as small as 5 mm. The optics are great and as I said, super easy to set up and use.

I have one I got from Harbor Freight but I wouldn't recommend it. It's too bulky and they have them now that work great off smartphones. A friend of mine works for an NHRA team and showed me the one they use. It's just a $40 cheapie from Amazon. I've been wanting to get one and just pair it with an old smartphone.

I re-built flatheads. I know flatheads. A re-built 21 stud flathead is now back in my early '38. Fredb, you're bore is no flathead.

if you buy the testlong nts500 from teslong you can choose the tip. I got the 3 lens end. It shows front and two 90 degree views. It's a pretty cool tool. Yes it fits down the spark plug hole

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I want a camera that will allow me to view the cylinder head as it approaches TDC. As long as I can see the top of the piston at TDC I’ll be happy. It sounds like one with mirrors may eliminate the need to make the 90 degree turn to bring the piston head into view.

CJ, I ordered the one you suggested on Amazon. It looks like it has a side view that will let me view at an angle without a mirror. I will report back how it works.
