35 steering box rebuild instructions
Has anybody got a 35 passenger steering box rebuild instructions they can share or email to me. I have a new worm pressed onto my shaft and a new sector, bearings, races, and gaskets, just need to reassemble and adjust correctly. Any what not to do's or assembly tips not in the instructions, and finally what's the best oil to use. I'm sure i read a post about lube before so i'll do a search on that subject. Dan.

Re: 35 steering box rebuild instructions
The Service Bulletins have a good procedure. For the worm and shaft adj. with shims to JUST remove all end play. For the sector end play, adj. screw to JUST remove all end play. I make my own corkpreen gaskets for the sector housing to the box, so that they fit and set one side only in RTV, grease the other side so the gasket can slip without distorting when doing the mesh adj. find the center of the worm by finding total shaft revolutions and devide by 1/2 and mark the shaft. Adj housing to JUST remove all play between sector and worm at the center position, as soon as the shaft moves from the center there wil be more end play. Finally adjust the excentric screw to equalize the end play at NEARLY full lock ( minus a 1/4 or half turn)on both sides LH and RH. and your done. It takes a lot more time, than it did to write this.

Re: 35 steering box rebuild instructions
Dan,
Don't forget the sector seal. It's been my experience that some preload on the worm is necessary because without preload when everything is hooked up in the vehicle the resistance of the tires on the pavement will cause slight up and down motion of the worm/shaft assembly. This is only my opinion from under the shade tree. 85 - 140 gear lube available anywhere seems to work real good. Charlie ny |

Re: 35 steering box rebuild instructions
Just a thought here - a friend of mine who restores 35-40 Fords likes to "upgrade" the 35 box with the 39 box saying it's a better box. You would need the 39 frame mount as well.
I'm hoping others will chime in and shed more light on this ... |

Re: 35 steering box rebuild instructions
I agree with Tom , the later steering box which I believe was introduced
in '37 makes a nice upgrade. I installed a '37 box in my '35 and kept the '35 mount. One hole had to be relocated. In this particular case I was restoring the car and the body was on the frame but the engine had yet to be installed . This made things real easy because I could occupy the engine bay and line everything up. How have you been Tom...Hershey this year ? Charlie ny |
