Default Factory 3x2 intake?

Hi Guys.

I have lurked here for a couple years and have finally gotten to the point where I will need to contribute. I recently purchased a '47 Super Deluxe Tudor that was an abandoned restoration project. It runs and drives - just need to put some of it back together.

I have been checking out sites like the Barn, the HAMB and various vendors to learn about flatheads and old Fords. In my travels I recently came across a fellow who has what he claims is an original factory 3x2 setup. He said they were originally used on police cars in California.

Did Ford make a factory 3x2 intake? Is this story even remotely true? I can't tell from looking at his photos if the intake is aluminum or cast iron. Any help clearing this up would be appreciated.

Thanks - I hope to hang around for a while and I am looking forward to tapping into the collective wisdom of the Barn.

Thor

From the looks of it, it could be a factory intake, stranger things have happened. However, it looks like it is for a late Flathead, 8BA, 8RT, 8CM, etc., not a 59A which was stock for your '47. Hopefully someone here will have the answer to yet another Ford Flathead mystery...

That is, surely, not a FORD part number, on it.
If that story is true, someone will know all about it. I doubt it, myself.

Guys,

Thanks for the response so far. I am only curious about this - no plans to put a multi-carb intake like this on my flathead...yet.

Looks like a welded up affair to me. Gotha & others used to sell the cast iron risers to weld to your single carb manifold.
The only factory backed multi-carbed intake for the flathead was the one used on '34-'35 Indy cars.

42 Merc - the intake you refer to is the Hexagon twin carb intake - I have one on my 41 that my Grandpa fit to the car in 47 when he finished the hop up job on the car.
The Hexagon intake positioned the carbs 180 degree from the std positioning, which means you have to do a bit of adjustment on the throttle and chock linkages.

Gotha or similar, configured to function as a dual...they could be welded up level to be triples, but whoever did this wanted a low dual or he would have welded at that level to avoid linkage nightmares! You can see these things advertised in almost any issue of HRM for at least the first half of the 1950's.

I assume you are refering to the race car,not whats in his pic is not a Hexagon manifold.Look closer the 2 stud holes are facing the front of the manifold which is correct positioning for a normal setup. Looks CI to me and definatly 49-53.As most after market multiple carb ones were Alum. This could have been made up by a good welder OMO. ken ct.

That intake in the pics sure looks rusty enough to be iron. If it was a factory item it must be a "California" intake. At least on the tri 5 Chevys, anything that's out of the ordinary is labeled "California" one piece frame, "California" one piece bumpers, etc, etc...

Hi Ken
Thanks for the note - the 41 is very special and I took a lot of effort to ensure she is put back to the hop up spec my Grandpa outfitted with after WWII from 46-47. The only thing that is different now is that the ride height is a bit higher then he ran - I am considering lowering 2-2.5" with new leaf springs - if this can drop her enough.

I added pics to my profile in an album - I hope you all enjoy them.
Best
John

1963turnerjohn, That car is sharp! I love the Lincoln steering wheel and the "spinner" hub caps, very cool!

I run a three carb manifold on my 50 F-1,I was at a show and did not know what class I was in. I ask the head of the show, he says original stock. I win first place, after picking up my award someone asks is three carbs a factory option,I say yes a police option. It may not seem fair but at a previous show the best Ford truck had a Chevy engine. So I guess I got even. But its not about the awards its having people say WOW when they look at your car or truck.

You could buy these back in the 50's and 60's and braze them to your intake
