49-51 wagon hitch
Is there anyone on here that’s put a hitch on a shoebox Woodie? I can’t find any examples and I’m just looking for ideas
It’ll just be to pull a small wood boat so about 700lbs max I think |

Here's a couple of pictures but you can't see the hitch.

Re: 49-51 wagon hitch
That shoebox belongs to Ron Heiden, who does the woodie wood working. He has towed that trailer all over the west!
Not only the weight involved, the trailer must track behind the tow vehicle. 700lbs., includes the trailer + boat + stuff that you put in the boat while trailering?? That rear cross member on my 49 that Ford used is flimsy. Weld in or a bolt on?

the boat will only get towed with the wagon to the odd show here and there(if it can even tow it with the flathead) so it won't be loaded up Also is that Ron guy still around? so far i've only heard of rick mack still doing the wood for the wagons |

Re: 49-51 wagon hitch
You certainly do not want to use an era type hitch. I have two rear 1949-51 Ford Station wagon rear bumpers with nice looking bolts through the center section of the rear bumper that held the style of bumper hitch used back in the day.

Re: 49-51 wagon hitch
A good hitch set up should have at least a heavy wall square tube welded to fairly thick fabricated fittings that fit into the aft frame rails where they can be bolted in to reinforce the two rail ends. Boxing the fittings on both sides so that the load tube inserts into them and then adding gussets should insure that the load tube will handle a good load. It pays to know someone or have knowledge of structural fabrication.

Re: 49-51 wagon hitch
My suggestion would be to go to a local RV trailer hitch dealer an have them fabricate a receiver frame mounted hitch for you car.. If you look close at the pix that 'petehoovie' posted, the bumper on the woody with the Teartdrop Trailer is bent down because all of the weight in on the bumper

Re: 49-51 wagon hitch
No afraid not. The straight one that I found replaced the ones with a hole in them.
