Default Black tail pipe

I have had problem with sooty tail pipe and plugs. I have installed smaller main jets which seem to help some; but I have only driven maybe 50 miles around town. How many miles with new jets should it take to determine if the smaller jets are going to take care of my problem and give me nice tan color in tail pipe and spark plugs? I need to clean, if not replace. the spark plugs I am sure.

Thanks,

Lawson

Lawson, how is your air cleaner, maybe its plugged up. I put on a small one with a K and N filter in it. I could tell there difference when I was starting up the motor. and I could hear it breathe

Oil pressure is fine. I am hoping the test from Uncle Max will give me some clarity.

It is fine. I am using a good clean oil bath filter.

Personally, I would focus more on the plug color than the exhaust pipe color. If the plug color is good I wouldn't worry about the exhaust pipe. Don't know if they used exhaust deflectors on trucks but the one on my car sure keeps that black stuff off the bumper and bumper gaurds.

Lawson I said FUEL PRESSURE not oil if you were answering my post.
My 34 5W had black sooty tips & ran like stink until I installed a pressure regulator. I could not believe the difference.

This is assuming you don't have aluminum heads, in which case you'd need to let them cool before playing with the sparkplugs.

Uncle Max, I followed your instructions to a "T". Worked great. I did clean the plugs before the trip to make them easier to read after the trip. All of the plugs are clean as a pin, and tan on several of them. 60 MPH most of the time but I did sneak up to 70 once. No black or soot on any of them. I haven't checked the tail pipe. I will do that tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

I had no problems with my other vintage Fords but the pickup isn't quite as high speed friendly, or maybe my youthful age of 82 has slowed me down some, afoot or in an old Ford. LOL
