Default Marvel Schleber carburetor

I am rebuilding a Marvel Schleber carb using parts from Renner’s Corner. I’ve disassembled it, soaked it clean etc; now getting ready to reassemble. In the threaded passage where the GAV valve goes there is a big wad of woven wool-like material filling the passage from the GAV to the jet. Reminds me of an old Zippo lighter that used a wooly material to absorb the lighter fluid. I’ve tried to show it in the pics. Looks to me like it’s supposed to be there but I don’t know. If it is, what’s it purpose? Should I leave it alone.

Is it the seal? This is what Renner's shows.

From the old specs, I think it was a leather or fibre type seal. I've had fuel leak up without a seal, and the Renner's is rubber or nitrile as in post 2 (unless it's now different) which seemed to dissolve with the ethanol fuel. I've used a fiber washer when seating the GAV outer brass fitting at the top of the casting threads to minimize fuel migrating up the threads. If the seal isn't shredded or coming apart, you may want to leave it or try something like buna which is supposed to be ethanol resistant.(see attached).
