Default Speedometer Cable- A Grease Pump?

Looking for advice on a reoccurring issue where from what I can determine my Speedometer cable is pumping up grease/oil from U -Joint into speedometer.

First thought was over greasing the U joint but I am not sure what that even is as when it was greased it did not flow out at that time. I am sure some of the oil from trans is in the mix probably making a more fluid mixture.

This is the second time so I thought I would ask...

And what a mess at creates

Thanks
Dan

Update...
I added one additional step that I did not do before.. flushed the grease (it was thick) out of the speedometer cable and gear assembly and oiled both.

Will see..

It sounds like the cable was "pumping" the grease up sorta the same way a screw pump works.

A lot depends on what is utilized for u-joint lube. Ford made their own formula of sodium soap and gear lube mix. The cavity really shouldn't be filled up. It only needs to bathe in lube. The best modern lube is the John Deere corn head grease. It is a thixotropic grease that turns fluid in motion but gets more solid after motion stops. It will stay in the cavity better than anything else.

some cables are “ wound” in the wrong direction and can act like a pump

Thanks.
It creates such a mess..even behind the speedometer. The cable is also missing a stay on the speedometer end. Something is just not right about the entire cable and given some of the less then desirable repairs from the past I have had to resolve... decided to replace the entire cable

When greasing the cable, don't put grease in the upper 6". That area is straight so doesn't need it. Too much grease will get into the speedo itself, and cause problems.
