Default Heater to firewall

I have a 29 leatherback with an Autolite heater. What was used between inlet and manifold to seal? 1516743707274642490271.jpg

Instructions that came with a repop heater that I installed showed a space left open.

I have seen it both ways. Many people place a section of a pre-heater hose. I even saw someone use a section of a soda can. I do agree that it was ment to be left open
