Strange Holley 4000

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I'm hoping someone on here can help me with this. I recently bought a remanufactured Holley 4000. Every example i've seen so far has small rounded choke plates. Mine has fairly large rectangular choke plates. I was wondering if someone on here had ever seen one like mine and knew what it originally came on. It should have some information stamped on the bottom horizontal base of the carb.


Can you tell us what that information is?


Does it have a spark valve on the side?

If you're trying to attach photos the 'file size' of each one has to be less than 2 mb or you'll get an upload error message

Like Oldmics said, the part number on the back of the mounting flange is a sure way to identify. Basicly, the tall choke plate carbs (4000's) were mainly used on heavy trucks with governors. Not just on Ford. The only one used on a car was the 1956 Lincoln 368 engine (all 1956 Lincolns including the Mark II). The truck carbs with manual chokes had poppets on the choke plates. The '56 Lincoln carb did not (Holley number LIST 1094).

Also the '57 Ford/Thunderbird 312 supercharged engine used a specially calibrated version of this carb. Extremely rare.

Sorry I"m just now replying. The number on the base is ECS-9510 E LIST-1391. It does have a spark valve, and there is a giant govenor on the front.

You probably bought it with the intention of using on a particular engine in a vehicle.
What would they be?

Don't laugh, but i was hoping to use it on the 239 flathead in my 49 Ford.

Do you have an intake manifold that matches the carb and also the intake ports of the heads on the engine?
What distributor are you thinking of using?
(I know nothing about oem distributors on flatheads)

I've read that the 4 barrel manifold offenhauser offers is a good match for the holley 4000 and that the load-a-matic distributor can be used if you change the drive gear. So far that's the plan, the flathead is currently seized, gotta get that sorted out first to figure out if i can even build on it.

At this past Carlise I saw an Offy manifold for a flathead with a teapot mounted on it.


First time I had seen (or heard) of that being used. It was pretty neat looking.

I know you already bought the carb and everything, but I don't think you will be too happy with the performance or vacuum signal to the distributor (Loadomatic) on your '49 239 flathead. The governor will automatically pull the throttle closed a bit when you get to a certain RPM, and it's hard to explain, but you can't easily change that feature.

There is a guy on the barn, or the hamb , or both , that has a flathead with 2 4000's on it. I think his handle is Kahuna. I have conversed with him several times in the past. he may be able to give you some info, and insight on using a 4000 series holly on a flathead

I wanted to make it to the spring swap meet, but had too much going on that weekend. I've heard Carlisles swap meets are awesome, never been to one though hopefully this fall.

I'm not too worried about the performance aspect to be honest. I'll be running EAB heads and hopefully I can get ahold of an EAB camshaft, stock bore. Being a realist I'm pretty sure I'll be lucky to hit 130 hp. Im mostly looking to build something that cruises comfortably at highway speeds.

PJ, with a governor carb you may be lucky to make it to the low range of the speed limit on the freeway. All depends on your rear axle ratio.
