Garage Cabinets

I am re designing my garage and wonder if anyone has used the Home Depot "New Age" cabinets.

They are not sold in any of the stores so I can not stop by to view them.

Quality, looks etc..

Any other cabinet brands that you have experience with and could share with me would also be appreciated.

I did my whole workshop for almost nothing. I went to my local cabinet maker and asked if he had any nice cabinets he removed to put new ones in. I helped him remove a whole huge kitchen and he gave me them for sweat equity. I ended up giving some away, worth a shot. Pete/Ct.

Just something for consideration. I used my old kitchen cabinets which suit me fine by keeping stuff out of sight.
And cabinets can be viewed at most Home Depots.

My garage is very small So I used a combination of our old kitchen cabinets, and one metal cabinet from Harbor Freight, and two metal ones I got from eBay.

If there is a "Restore" outlet for Habitat for Humanity near you, they are a great source for kitchen cabinets. I was able to score a full kitchen set for one garage at a very fair price. I was also able to get a set of office style cabinets which I used in another garage. Re-using old cabinets is better than having them scrapped. Habitat for Humanity is a good charity.

Being frugal (cheap), I used the old cabinets from our kitchen when we remodeled. The carpenters removed the old cabinets with a sledge hammer and reduced them to splinters.

Hope I'm not the only one trying to figure out how, if the cabinets were reduced to splinters, they were used?

My stepdad built shelves in each corner of the garage from restaurant table tops. Formica covered and about 3 ft. square. Couple 2X4s for the outside corners and 1X2s on the studs for support. Think he bought then at a furniture salvage place. Also the recycled kitchen cupboards for the walls, had to be dirt cheap and work great.

The splintered cabinets were the ones that I hadn't had time to remove myself.

I have the New Age cabinets in my residential garage, purchased early this year. I would consider them commercial grade, not industrial strength. The cabinet shelves are pretty light gauge steel, and are adequate for maybe 50 lbs. definitely not strong enough if your storing iron heads, gears, hubs, etc. They are fairly well made and do look very nice. Stainless tops are glued to what looks like pressboard, heavy but not so strong. If you put a cabinet under them they're plenty strong. Tall storage cabinets also require one shelf in the middle to give the doors a latch point. The assembly nuts and bolts are cheap metric crap, but do the job. Floor cabinets have nice adjustable feet with nylon slides on the bottoms, you can get quite a bit of adjustment out of them. Personally I am satisfied with them for what I need. One other thing, don't buy them unless they are on sale, I think sale prices are about what they should sell for for what you get.

Watch C/list for free kitchen cabinets. That's what I did and lined a wall with uppers. Why spend $$ when this costs you nothing other than your labor. Unless you're building a "show" garage like on TV.

Cheap laminate flooring over plywood works good for counter tops.

I vote for Restore as well - you get to see them and if you take your measurements before you go, you can figure out a config before even buying them .... I love that place .....

garagejournal.com has tons of discussions on garage cabinets. one of the most popular is the 30" gladiator overhead that comes on sale for 100 each.

here is pictures of my garage with some of the overheads installed. i used their track system so as to be very flexible on adjusting where they are. i used the same track system to hang things on as you see in the pictures.

for fun i included the garage bathroom lav/sink that i made out of a rolling tool chest.

i also used pallet racking for garage shelves. you can also make amazingly strong and relatively inexpensive workbenches out of them. just get ones short enough for your garage and you can have a worktop, shelving underneath and overhead shelving all in the same unit. i used cut 2x6's like home depot does for the lowest shelf and wire rack on the rest.

yea, i have stuff piled on the tool boxes. still getting the garage organized....

I used some old kitchen cabinets that a friend gave me when he did his kitchen over. Even the vertical (upright) cabinets can be used horizontal using hardware store hardware to hold the top up.
