New here with model ar questions
I just bought a 1928 model ar stake body truck with emergency brake on left and a red steering wheel it has a zenith 1 carburetor and a powerhouse generator. Its in pretty good condition and runs and everything works on it. I paid 5k just wondering what its worth.

Re: New here with model ar questions
Does "worth" really matter?? Did you buy it just to "flip" it, or do you appreciate it for what it is and enjoy driving and maintaining it? Either way, it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. So in your case, $5,000.

Re: New here with model ar questions
Whether you paid too much for it or not is irrelevant. You now have something you can enjoy like you can't enjoy $5K in the bank. Get out there and enjoy your truck.
By the way - Got pictures?

Need more photos like under the hood and inside the cab. Hows the sheet metal it looks good wet. I think you could double your money if the mechanicals are in good shape.

Nice looking truck. Judging by the wheels, rear window and rear view mirror
I think your truck is an early 1929. Do the rear brakes have one or two brake rods per side? Bob |

Go online and do a Google Search, type in "1928 Ford Model A Stake Bed" and see if there are others on the market out there.

$5,000.00. Unless it was in China I would have bought it myself.
If there aren’t some hidden problems, engine, running gear, you did well. Easily double your money. Enjoy. |

Hey bob 2 rods on each side and title says 1928 and the emergency brake is on the left side of cab and has a red steering wheel which should mean it a early model 1928

Re: New here with model ar questions
Not sure if you're fishing to make money or confirming you did OK on the deal.
I'm not sure I would go with the guys about doubling your money.. It's a AA and they don't go fast due to the rear axles and you say the mechanicals are good.. but doing what I do which is work on "A"'s every day I would probably say that people think their cars are OK and the truth is that they probably aren't. Front ends need rebuilt on many so called "restored" cars, brakes, steering gears.. etc. It looks solid and is probably an OK driver that needs work. I think the advise of Mark Maron is accurate at 5K is what you paid for it and is probably about what it's worth. Honestly there aren't a ton of folks looking/wanting to buy AA trucks. Put it on fordbarn here and see if anyone answers for 10K.... If I were you unless you bought to speculate I would just enjoy it right now like it is. Any underhood shots.. front end, chassis, inside cab to share? Thanks, Larry Shepard |

Jsain10; Welcome to the barn. Great Looking truck. That big flatbed will be great for doing trips to the dump, and landscape supplies. The truck will more then "pay" for itself just using it for everyday chores. At $5000. You did good. Now go enjoy it. Jeff

Re: New here with model ar questions
Since the emergency brake is on the left side, it is an early to mid 28. What is the engine number? It should be below 400,000 if it is an early 28. That will tell you when the truck was manufactured, if it is the original engine.

Re: New here with model ar questions
It's worth $5001, so you did good. I think you did fine, and from what I can see in the pictures your cab metal looks excellent for being a big truck. Usually they get lots of dents. Most, if not all 28 trucks had wire spoke wheels, but they can be easily swapped. Show us the cowl lower lacing, so we can tell if it has the early or later style lip. Also the tank date would be helpful. The main thing is you have something you can drive right away and have fun with.

Re: New here with model ar questions
not bad at all for 5k. you got some scary looking wiring though... i hope you disconnect the battery when you park it at night.
the wire wheels were used into the early part of 29 as well untill the factory ran out. AA's got all the leftovers from the standard cars/trucks so a left hand emergency brake into 29 is not unheard of.

Re: New here with model ar questions
Value can be hard to pin down. An impulsive buyer (for lack of better term) probably won't care much beyond condition of the body and mechanicals and would be willing to pay one price. A person concerned about authenticity will want clarification on a lot of details and would be willing to pay more for a correct truck...and much less for one that isn't correct.
What's the engine number? Is there a date stamped on the driver's side firewall/gas tank? Get a copy of the Judging Standards & Restoration Guidelines and start to pick it apart to learn more about it. My extremely amateur opinion is that if the mechanicals are all in good order you got a deal at $5k. -Tim

Re: New here with model ar questions
It's better to be safe than sorry. I'm completely re-wiring my 29, necessary because there were no wires for the lights, horn, etc. After restoration the seller only did enough to get it running. As it was, the insulation from the ignition switch to the coil was a mess and I replaced it as well. Additionally I have put a disconnect switch on the negative battery terminal. While there are fewer buyers for AAs, I think you got a great buy. Have fun with it!

Many states didn't even require vehicle titles until well into the 1930's. So when people did finally register their vehicle, many times it was done from memory, or even worse, not even from the original owner. Engines can come and go...not a very reliable source of information after 90 years or use.

Well I for one care about the value of what I have,It gives you a better taste in your mouth when you are right side up..Enjoy that AA for what it is,a good old truck..reckon in a pinch you could shake 8500 out of it if you had too..not many can say they are that far to the 'good' with their model A's,most cats are underwater..the market is falling through the floor for restored cars, hell the hotrodders are buying them and cutting them up they are getting so cheap..

Re: New here with model ar questions
I'd like to see the cowl welt where the hood panel fits against the lower vertical sides of the cowl. So where the rear of the hood panels with louvers touch the cowl is what I'd like to see.
The Restoration Guidelines is an excellent book to have, and you can learn much about your truck from it. The SERVICE BULLETINS is also another good book to own, but try to get the full size, rather than the smaller yellow book. The radiator cap is one of the older cheap reproductions, and much better ones are made today, or you can buy a good original. The perf strap for the coil should be replaced with a good coil bracket, or with an original coil with the bracket spot welded to the coil. One at a time, you can improve small things like this and add value to the truck as you keep driving it. Can you find a tank date? |

Re: New here with model ar questions
That # 112786 you gave from from the title is an engine # that was made on May 2 1928.. That does not mean its original to the truck.. The gas tank dates did not start until mid 1928, so that truck should not have one.. Looks to me like a lot of 1929 parts, Trans, Clutch assy, even the floor boards are late ones. The gas tank has the high choke rod holder, The front motor mount "Looks" to have not been Cut ??.. And many more items make it a 1929..Still a nice fun truck @ a good price..

Jsain10, your truck is definitely not AR, but does look very nice. The more you learn, the more you'll know it's not. I don't want to be unfriendly, but I don't want you to be chasing rabbits. You got a good deal, so sell it or drive it. pAAt

The red steering you show is a Reproduction & can be bought today.. I have a 8/22/28 Special Coupe the has the hole on the left side with a factory plate over it for the Left Hand Brake Assy.. It also has a Red steering wheel... Get the books as stated and you will get all your answers, most of what you have..

Re: New here with model ar questions
AR used to describe an very early or early 28 is a made up term. For a description of part numbering used by Ford see : http://www.abarnyard.com/workshop/partnum.htm . many of the parts used on the early vehicles had a AR suffix, but many of the parts used on later cars had br, cr dr etc suffixes. No one refers to later cars as br, cr yet AR has persisted

Look under the steering wheel near the hub. if it says drake, it's reproduction. if it doesn't it could be original, or different reproduction, or the Drake was removed. still a great truck

Also a picture of the lower cowl welting. |

Re: New here with model ar questions
Take the wires off the cutout, and see if it sparks when you touch the terminal box wire back on the cutout. If it does, then the cutout is stuck closed. Pictures of the brush area might also help. If you can't post the large pictures, then email them to me.

Re: New here with model ar questions
The hood hook look like reproduction. The originals should be forged handle and hook. Your cowl looks like the second style with the welting on a lip of metal forward of the cowl, the same as my 9-27-28 Phaeton. The generator wire should be in a metal tube, until later in 29 when it changed to the fabric covering. AA trucks didn't get all the latest changes near as quickly as the A's did, so you have a mixture of many 28 and 29 parts. Hard to say what got replaced during the restoration.

Re: New here with model ar questions
Your 5 brush powerhouse looks good, but I'd remove the plastic tape and give it a coat or two of "LIQUID TAPE". This is like a rubber coating and dries fairly quickly. A second coat can be applied after a 5 minute wait. Thankfully no one has foolishly turned the commutator. How hot is hot? From working and engine and radiator heat, they will get pretty warm, but you should be able to lay your hand on it.
Use care around that Bakelite brush holder, as they are brittle and hard to find. I've repaired cracks in them with JB Weld, but nice ones are better and very rare. |

Re: New here with model ar questions
I will brush with liquid tape. thanks didn't think of that. Not sure i just remember one time it was really hot half hour after the truck was off. I love the truck and will slowly change things back over to 28 parts. Im sure i will learn more as i go.

Re: New here with model ar questions
Looks like a great truck, I don't think you got hurt at all on that deal, enjoy it!
As far as dating the truck, take a look at the mirror location on the hinge pillar. It's in a less common location and lower than most cabs you see around. This may help date your truck. Neil Wilson is working on an article for the Double A'er, check out this previous post - https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...=pickup+mirror -DAN |

Re: New here with model ar questions
You have a great looking truck from the photos seen.
If I were you, and as stated before, I would get a copy of the MARC/MAFCA Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards. Then you can look over every part on the truck and see if it closely matches what the standards say that should be right (or wrong) for your truck. It is kind of fun to do...that will really tell you what you have. However you need that engine number that is stamped on the frame to make a good start. Look for the assembly plant code on the body. It is located on the body cross brace just behind the heel of your feet as you sit in the cab. Once all your chassis parts and body parts are ID'ed, only then you can tell just what you have and what you need to replace to make it line up with the month and year that you want. Also as stated above...look in on Neil Wilsons AA site. Do you have the correct 88-A platform? There were a few different styles of the 88-A as they came out at different times during the 3 years (1928-1930) of production. The Standards will tell you the dates on those also. Pluck |
