30 Model A Zenith Carb
hello,
I bought a rebuilt card from a gentleman in Eaton Ohio. I put it on and it is hard to start and barely runs with the choke out and the throttle all the way open. It will run for about 15 seconds and die. He said it was preadjusted, what am I missing? Thanks |

Re: 30 Model A Zenith Carb
"Pre-adjusted" - was the carb actually tested on a car, or just set to standard settings on the bench?

Marshall. I’m sure you have some good information to pass on but doing it in a private message does not help others.

Marshall has help me with advice on a manifold leak in private messages, I believe he prefers the one on one conversations. Thanks Marshall, JD

Re: 30 Model A Zenith Carb
I bought a re-built carb years ago from Chris Pellikan (sp?)......he tested all of his re-built carbs on his own A......have never had to touch it since then....works perfectly.

Re: 30 Model A Zenith Carb
Time to learn how to adjust the zenith. Les Andrews red, volume 1 will walk you thru it,
Or enlist some local club members. Nothing like experience to learn from. |

Re: 30 Model A Zenith Carb
Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it. Stuck needle I assume from shipping.
Runs fine after tapping the carb with a small hammer. |

Re: 30 Model A Zenith Carb
Keep that small hammer with you for awhile. Had to do that with my rebuilt several times before it started to behave.

A Model A spark plug wrench works well as a small hammer, tap tap tap.

Re: 30 Model A Zenith Carb
If adjusting does not work, can try cleaning it yourself and replacing the jets with a jet kit from Renners, theirs are flow tested before being shipped.

Re: 30 Model A Zenith Carb
Sometimes the float sticks from just sitting awhile. If it keeps hanging up, then take it apart and make sure there isn’t a worn dimple where the shut of stem rides against the brass. Also some of the inlet valves just don’t that well even when new. You can check for smooth operation at the same time.
