64 Galaxie not charging
I always leave the keys in the car. Got in the car and found the GEN light on with the ignition key in the off position. Started the car and absolutely not charging.
Voltmeter showed the battery level of 12 volts with no deflection when I rev'd the engine. (When I found the GEN light on, I did not think to look and see if the voltage meter was reading anything because it shouldn't if the ignition is off) Earlier today I drove the car a good 40 miles and the aftermarket voltmeter was showing charge of 14 volts. I always glance at the gauges when driving and voltage gauge as usual was reading 14-15 volts. New voltage regulator and solenoid gauges installed about 3 months ago. I replaced them when charging was low at 12-12.5 volts. |

Re: 64 Galaxie not charging
Pop the cover off of the voltage regulator and look for a set of points similar to what are in your distributor. Try cleaning them and make sure they are not stuck.

Re: 64 Galaxie not charging
It sounds like the voltage regulator points may be stuck together inside the generator control unit (VR). There is also a cut out in there and they sometimes like to stick. The generator light gets its power through the switch but it has to get its ground through the voltage regulator since it is connected to the armature terminal. The wiring should be checked too.
