Default Frame VIN Location 1956 Merc

Anybody know where I can locate the frame VIN stamping for my 1956 Merc ?

The riveted plate is on the A pillar but the North Carolina inspectors will want to see number on the frame.

I looked ahead of the firewall on top of the frame but it isn't there .

Cool Re: Frame VIN Location 1956 Merc

I have a '54 Customline so our cars are fairly similar. I found my VIN under years of caked on crap on top of the frame, in the corner where the right inner fender panel and core support meet. You may have to push the little rubber splash guard out of the way.

The VIN is often stamped in more than one location. My '56 Fairlane's is stamped on the frame rail on top right side, about as evintho also described. It is also stamped along the top of the frame rail kind-of above where the diff is located but you'd likely have trouble locating it unless your remove the body.

Ask the NC inspectors if they are going to pay you for diassembling your car enough to see the VIN that's already on the data plate.

Sal they don't care , and if they don't find it you are then forced to get an assigned (conforming) VIN which is applied on a sticker .
With that comes a bonded title which require letters of appraisal and so on.
Been down that road twice with a couple of hot rods.

The DOT/DMV guys here are thorough but fair , it's the rules the they are forced to abide by that are ridiculous.

From the info I gathered on the internet and this forum it seemed that I would find the number on the right front frame rail .
I had almost given up but finally located it behind the right front bumper brackets .
Put a jack under the bumper pulled the brackets off and there it was .
Looked like a kindergartener had stamped it but in my experience most of them do.
Anyway it is the correct number .
Took a picture and then put the brackets back on . Have to take it apart again when the inspector comes over .
That's the one good thing here they will conduct the inspection at your house.

My '55 Ford has it stamped on top of the right side frame rail about where the front bumper brackets bolt on. You have to remove the bumper and splash pan to see it. Don't know why they won't accept the number on the serial number plate inside the driver's door that is still attached with the factory rivets.

The answer is pretty obvious - data plates can be bought (there are a couple of vendors) with any number whereas stamped numbers in the frame are harder to fool around with. These vendors also sell the factory type rivets.

While the vendors of the plates require some verification, that is fairly easy to make it up.
