Snakes
Coffee in one hand flash light in the other Engine hanging from hoist Trying to look at bottom side kneeling down I look over and there's a rattle snake all coiled up right under my hoist me and the coffee went flying the heat the last week has them moving around. To small to buzz real loud but big enough to make me jump.

Re: Snakes
Dennis,
That is one of the few good things living up here in the frozen tundra - no poisonous snakes. There are a few rattlesnakes along the bluffs of the southern Mississippi river gorge, but that is a very small area. Glad you didn't get bit. I hate all snakes! Did you keep it for a pet? Rusty |

Re: Snakes
I live on a ridge above a river canyon with plenty of snakes to go around. That one got in the way of my shovel. I had just set a can of mineral spirits down next to where it was coiled. But I didn't see the snake. I have a piece of plywood across the legs of my hoist that the engine is resting on a little shade for snakes 101 today.

Re: Snakes
Dennis,
Spent 4 days at The Rattle Snake Round-up in Sweetwater TX. and learned all about them. The venom in the little ones is more pure, not good, and the females ( no I don't how to tell ) are always PO. Make yourself a snake hook(look on line) out of a golf club, works great for BBQing also. Dudley |

Re: Snakes
Dennis, more snakes on my side of the mountain too. Two so far. May post under 'for sale' as hat bands.
The little one's are dangerous because they inject ALL the venom into you. The adults only give a partial dose(how neighborly!). |

Re: Snakes
When my son was about 5yrs. old he brought a big one home in his bicycle basket. He told us he just picked it up and put it there. Maybe rattlers can sense fear? Or maybe it was just too cold that day, I don't know.

Re: Snakes
Two years ago I took two sacks of GENUINE Walla Walla Sweet Onions down into my cool root celler here on the ranch. I decided I wanted about 5 or so up in the kitchen so I grabed them and headed up the stairs.
Got to the top and just as I was going to put my last foot out I heard the familiar sound of a ratle snake down in the cubby of the stairs. I mean to tell you those 5 onions went up in the air and I left those steps faster than one can blink...that rattler was pissed off BIG time. Do not know why I did not see him when I went down. After gathering myself I took a hoe and well, you can guess the rest of the story. Pluck |

Re: Snakes
I feel about the same way about snakes... When I was young, I was running a Tiller in my father's garden. I hit a snake. The snake went North and South. I went East, and the Tiller continued West for a little bit.

Re: Snakes
When I was about six, my sister and I were were walking through a field and a
rattler slithered over the top of my foot. I froze until it passed----and then I ran home----to change my wet pants.

Re: Snakes
Well, you shouldn't have gone to bed hungry that night, they taste like chicken.. This isn't a rattler story, but, one day while in 'scenic southeast Asia' one of the fellas decided to sit on a log.. The log didn't care much for that and got up and crawled away. Turned out to be a pretty good sized Python..

Re: Snakes
Holy Cow Bullwinkle! I don't think that's gonna happen here in economically depressed, cold and snowy on the end of a dead end highway called Sturgeon Bay, on the 'thumb' of Wisconsin. One more reason not to live in a waterless desert called California.

Re: Snakes
OK, I'll be the weirdo stand-alone "DON'T KILL THEM". They are beneficial as they eat the rodents. Ever had an interior invaded by nesting mice and rats? I'll take the snakes thank you.

Re: Snakes
On average I kill about 5 per year out salvaging parts cars. I try not to kill many of them, just the ones that are in the way of me getting things done. Likely I see about 20 for everyone that I kill. For the most part I only kill the ones that pose a threat to my work area or in the path to the pickup. There is nothing worse than having your hands full of tools or parts and have one coiled up ready to strike at your feet. Rod
