Re: Driveline "Ticking" Noise on Deceleration
The shaft wouldn't slide far enough forward to come off the pinion and lose drive, but movement may cause a problem with speedo gears and uj. I don't know if it would move far enough to really cause a problem, the end of the shaft would probably contact the bolt in the end of the gearbox and cause a noise/vibration. The car shouldn't actually stop driving, though.

Almost the same but not quite
I had the roll pin fracture on the clutch fork shaft on my 40. It is an interesting experience when the clutch is disengaged and the clutch starts to engage all buy itself. |

Re: Driveline "Ticking" Noise on Deceleration
I ended up using a 1/4" Number 8 hardened bolt and nut. The bolt seemed tight in the hole and there did not appear to be any slack in the splines. I used red locktite on the nut, tightened the nut, then cut the bolt off with about an extra 1/16th of an inch of length. Then I peened the bolt.
It will be interesting to see how long it lasts. My theory in using the bolt was that if there is enough slack in the splines to shear it, then I'm going to be looking for a new rear end in any event, whether I used a pin or a bolt. I will update if there are any further issues, but noise is now gone, at least for the time being. |
