Re: info on a banger motor
Yeah, kinda like this hi-jacked thread, from a new guy just trying to get an answer to a reasonable question. He got the ONLY one answer to his question, and a great tip to obtain the very informative new book by Jim B.
BTW...what ever happened to civility/courteous behavior here Being uncivil/discourteous doesn't belong here anymore than the your opinion of someones use of 'slang' terminology ! For example, create YOUR OWN thread to bitch about what words work for you or not ! Don't try to embarrass a member for asking a question, by hijacking |

Re: info on a banger motor
When I was a teenager in the late '50's Model A's were referred to as 4 Bangers and A Bones. Terms of endearment.

Re: info on a banger motor
I am really surprised that automotive slang can be such a sore subject for some guys. 4 banger, 6 banger, bent 8, mill, jugs, etc, etc... I dont see a problem here.

Re: info on a banger motor
I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my off the wall comments. Banger is just kind of a term that makes me think of an old jalopy rattling down the street... My A doesn't rattle OR bang, unless somethings wrong so the term gives me heartburn. I understand how the term comes into play, shortened from 4-banger. I appreciate those of you who can stay on topic and give good advice. A little humor now and then never done any harm either. As far as building an A motor, Ron Kelly built an A motor for my uncle's Pietenpol airplane. I looked it over before it was closed up and it looked amazing, can't remember now exactly but seems like it produced 90hp? It had dual ignition, downdraft carb, inserts, full pressure, balanced, harmonic balancer, etc etc. If I remember right I believe it was featured one time in a magazine too. Been too many years ago. One thing I remember hearing was the importance of a harmonic balancer when drilling the crank??? That ring a bell with anyone?

Re: info on a banger motor
As a older "Kid" in the 1960s, we used to call re-emerging four cyls engines Four Bangers. AFAIR, in the 50s, the only 4cyls were Jeeps, Henry Js, and Crosleys (till 1952). Occasionally, we'd refer to a Chevy or Ford six as a six banger. It never referred to a specific brand and we always said the words four or six in front of the word "Banger" But that was local to our part of NJ, like the term A-models is local to the Carolinas.

Re: info on a banger motor
4 and 6 banger is common around here. My car is built as an early 50s racer, and trust me with the handmade header and straight pipe it BANGS.
