Fuel Mileage
What is a good rule of thumb for mileage when planning trips and tours. I haven't been able to get a good number yet for my car, seems to be somewhere between 15 and 20 mpg around town.

Re: Fuel Mileage
That sounds about right. If you drink as much coffee as I do, you'll have to pee and stretch your legs before you run out of gas.

Re: Fuel Mileage
The last time that I took my car on a 500 mile round trip, I got between 18-19 miles per gallon.

Re: Fuel Mileage
Last fall on a 1500 mile Model A tour in Utah, I got about 18 MPG average. That was at touring speeds with a "B" engine with a Snyder head and Mitchell O.D. I felt I was in the ball park when compared to other cars on the tour.
More then stock compression and an O.D. will help. That was my experience. Chris W. |

Re: Fuel Mileage
I have several Model A Fords and I drive them at about 38 to 42 highway and about 25 in town. Mileage seems to be 14 in town and 20 highway. Wayne

Re: Fuel Mileage
I've always heard around 18, a few do better on the highway.

Re: Fuel Mileage
I figure I am at something over 20 mpg for average driving
I have averaged 23 mpg at 60+ for a trip of over 1000 miles some people are ok with 10mpg---- probably every 125 miles would work for most everybody |

Re: Fuel Mileage
I'm not so worried about the cost or the actual mileage. 11 gallons gives you 165 miles at 15 mpg, so that just means 120 miles between stops, which is OK for touring.
The speedo in my A is not corrected for the 3:54 rear end, so miles reading is about 9% off for the speedo gear I have. I'm going on the first tour in the car in a week, so will get a chance to measure it with the GPS. Thanks all, John

Re: Fuel Mileage
I get better mileage in Nevada than I get in Oregon. This true for any car I drive. I think Oregon gets inferior gas.

Re: Fuel Mileage
is Oregon higher elevation than Nevada? high elevation means less power which means you need more pedal to get going or stay the same speed.

Re: Fuel Mileage
I have actually been tracking my fuel mileage the last couple of months because I down loaded a free application on my IPhone called "Mileagekeeper". My 31 Slant Window averages 15.8 city/highway and my best mileage on a road trip was 19.3 and that was all highway in West Virginia. The car will get a solid 14.5 MPG in city and I really think that if I take her on the highway on a mostly level road will be over 22 MPG and maybe better if I pay attention to my GAV & Timing.

Re: Fuel Mileage
Most of my Oregon driving is done at about 500' above sea level. I don't know about Nevada.

Re: Fuel Mileage
Don't think 10 MPG is OK, no matter how much money you have! Using that much fuel means you are washing down the cylinder walls with raw gas, wearing out rings and cylinder walls, diluting the oil causing more bearing wear, causing air pollution and stinking up the neighborhood! Show a little respect for your car and fix it!

Re: Fuel Mileage
I'll bet the difference in gas between Oregon and Nevada is one has 10% Alcohol.
Alcohol burns best around 6 to 1. This means you need to burn roughly twice as much to equal Gasoline.

Re: Fuel Mileage
My father doesn't drive his car during three years.
Last sunday morning, we just put oil, coolant and gas on it and drive it 150 miles : 8 mpg ! Ouch ! It's a model B engine with model A head, manifolds and carb. No leaks but it smells gas at the rear of the car (exhaust pipe). Any ideas ? Carb. ? Dist. ? Compression ? Last edited by Gabalus; 09-13-2015 at 02:31 PM. |

Re: Fuel Mileage
The carb is gummed up most likely from stale gas.
The float is not shutting off completely making the engine run rich. Could be lose dirt or rust in the fuel. This does assume it ran fine 3 years ago and nothing's been done. Unless you feel a serious miss fire in the engine under load the distributor should be fine. If the points corroded during the 3 years it would not have spark. They could still be dirty but if there is no Miss fire under load they can't be to bad.

Re: Fuel Mileage
On my 2,800 mile trip to bring my '30 Tudor home, I got between 15.1 and 17.8 MPG (IRRC).
This was before I installed a Bert's rebuilt carb and I don't have any numbers to share since that install.
