Sleeve bearing for spring shackles
Hi Guys and Girls,
The bearing sleeves for the spring perch won’t go in . They seem to be a smaller hole. I drive the old ones out and they seemed smaller. Was there different perch sizes? It’s a 29 my 28 fit the new sleeves with no issues. What’s happening 🥴 Thanks in advance for any info Daryl |

for the nuts. Moly filled Delrin requires no lubrication. It is built in. |

I have bought from them for Decades and they never cease to amaze me with what they sell and how fast it comes! I'm from Canada and McMaster looks after everything including shipping, Canadian taxes, duty and no extra charges upon delivery. No they don't pay me and yes they sell bushings! |

Re: Sleeve bearing for spring shackles
It seems almost every supplier and shackle manufacturer supplies a different bushing for this application. The best fitting steel bushings are usually the ones that have a seam (or split) that runs the length of the bushing. This allows some "give" as the bushing is pressed in. If you have this type of split bushing, it's sometimes helpful to grind or file the edge of the split to flatten out the upset that the split has caused in the metal.
You're wondering why you had no problems doing the same operation in your other car. The problem could be in the perches as opposed to the bushings. In the late 70s/early 80s there were reproduction perches that were made in Argentina. They were all that was available at the time. They could be "made to fit" but there was literally no measurement on them that was the same as the comparable measurement of an original spring perch. Of course, those perches could now be 40 years old and so appear to be original. If the new bushings work properly in the spring eyes, I'd look further to see why they don't work in the perches. Good luck in your efforts to find out where the problem lies and rectify the issue. It's easy to assume the new part you have in hand is "wrong", but that's not always the case. |

Maybe the best option for me is to make my own. Does anybody have dimensions for the bushes, front and rear. Are they compressed by the shackle pin?

Re: Sleeve bearing for spring shackles
I searched McMaster Carr this morning and there are no bushings that can be used for the Model A. They do have Delrin material that can be machined to make bushings.
Urethane bushings are available on the hot rod sites for the front and rear. They come in pairs for each hole and have flanges. The price is reasonable, about $2 each or $32 for the entire car. You have to buy new shackles though because the flanges make the old shackles too short. (I think.) The flanges are to keep the ends of the springs from rubbing against the plates on the shackles. (Steel to steel contact). No grease is used. Urethane is used on modern cars and is good at absorbing impact.
