I think the 42 doesn't have the ford script pressed into the rear bottom corners of the hood,

Also, I have a 42 and the running board bolts aren't visible on the topside.

That truck looks about like mine did when I first got it so it is not beyond hope.
Check the inside of the glove box door there should be a model tag that will tell you what year, engine and model the truck is. My 1945 is as follows: 59C, 5 is for 1945, 9 is the engine type, in this case a 100 HP 239 V-8, C stands for commercial which is a 1/2 ton pickup. Yours should start with either 2 for 1942 or 7 for 1947. |

Re: how can you tell the 1942 from 1947 pickup apart
Up through '45, the bolt heads were not visible on the tops of the running boards. I'm not sure about '46, but I know by '47 they had the bolts go completely through the boards.
I have heard of the Ford Script pressed into the hood before, but I don't remember if that was a solid date-maker. Otherwise, the glovebox door VIN tag is your best bet

Re: how can you tell the 1942 from 1947 pickup apart
If the wiring harness is still there, the 42 and 45 is different from the later ones. I learned this when I replaced the harness on my 45. I can't recall the difference right now. When I get my wits about me, I will share that info. As I recall, there is a difference in where the wires join coming from the battery and branching off down to the starter and back through the firewall.

42 had soy bean ford scrip on the hood sides...so if it has Ford pressed into the steel its a 43-47. 42 would have what's left of the soy bean (plastic) Ford script or two small holes where it used to be.

43-44 truck hoods were smooth, no holes for the 41 style emblem or the later stamped Ford. My dad had a '44 ex-Army truck with a smooth hood...

Re: how can you tell the 1942 from 1947 pickup apart
Military G8T types had the bumps on the fenders where the park lamps would go but no lamps. The headlamps had a guard bar on the outside of the light assembly and there were no Ford scripts on the hoods that I've seen. I haven't seen any 43 thru 44 Commercial pickup types. Just the G8Ts. The 1945 start up for civilian production pickups & trucks was late in the year after the War Department gave the go ahead so the production wasn't real high but they are still out there.

I have part of a script dangling from a spare hood. I had no idea they were Henry's beloved soy plastic.

Re: how can you tell the 1942 from 1947 pickup apart
In Australia, these 1942-1947 Ford Commercial Fords are commonly referred as "Jailbar" Fords. I don't know if they are called that in the USA? Regarding telling the different years apart, I can't talk for USA Ford, but our Australian 1942 models didn't have Quarter windows, as is evident in the above photos of this restored pair of 1942 Ford Trucks. They were entered in different local Ford shows a few years back. Don't know if this helps? |

Note that this Australian "Jailbar" Ford Pickup has Quarter Windows. That would indicate that it is a 1946 or 1947 model. |

Re: how can you tell the 1942 from 1947 pickup apart
Canadian built commercial pickups had differences throughout the flathead era plus the additional Mercury pickups. I don't know what all was different but stuff was mainly just made in different factories with different manufacturing techniques at times. The big factor in this was the world war. Canadian production of war materials started converting in late 1939 and early 1940 so I don't know how many 1942 pickups were made in Canada. Most Ford vehicles going to the south pacific region had their origins in Canada. It would be interesting to know the figures on this for the civilian type vehicles. Some pickups may also have been produced as military vehicles by Ford Canada. I don't know if G8T trucks were produced there or not. I also don't know how much different 4X4 stuff was produced by Marmon Herrington
The more the old Ford pickups get repaired, taken apart, and put back together, the more the picture gets blurry about what year all the parts are. The best clue was the engine originally but most likely don't have their original one. The 221 V8 and the G 6-cylinder were the common pre-war engines. Prewar ignition distributors were different. The body differences are a lot more subtle as previous posts suggest. The frame number is still the best way to tell. |

I have a feeling the 42 had the fuel filler on the opposite side to later versions and did not have the reinforcing strip around the door window glass.Cheers.
