Air Filter (just a question not trying to start a debate)

So what do you guys think about an air filter like this, I know it's not historically correct but definitely is out of the way if everything.

Without something to compare this filter to for scale, it is impossible to tell exactly how big it is. My gut feel, without hard data to back it up, is that the filter element area is too small for our cars. If it restricts the flow of air, on a stock Model A Zenith carburetor, it will make the engine run rich.

That's what I'm not sure of either, I've been running her with no filter at all but thought this could be a good alternative when a filter is needed.....I'm pretty sure these are actually made for motorcycles.

Funny, unless you are driving on dirt or gravel roads, it ain't needed!

Didn't come with the car and that was ALL dirt and gravel roads back then.

I use the air maze with replaceable filters and do not find it in my way. Not a show car just a driver.

Just curious. If I don't need my air filter why does it keep getting dirty so I have to clean it. It MUST be filtering SOMETHING...

You are in So Cal, we know it is smog it's filtering.

I'm actually on team "no filter" I'm a newbie to A's and have minimal mechanical skills at best, I've tried the high boy, the one that hangs down by the manifold and the one that curls under the carb and I can tell that she runs way better with no filter.

The purpose of starting the thread was to see if anyone has tried this type filter. I did order one $8.50 to put in th carb over the winter for rodent deterrent, right now I have it covered with duct tape and thought this would be easier if I wanted to run the car over the winter.

FWIW; Humble Opinion On Starting A Logical Debate on Filtering Air:

Installing a recommended Model A Large K & N Hi-Boy Air Filter in 2016, and installing specified air filters in Modern cars are like logical females installing today's female sanitary Tampons in 2016.

Please remember, in some cases, in 2016, we will always have to live with some nasty jerks who omit same, live with the consequences, and these cheap people really just don't give a damn.

Long live your "well used" Model A engine with an air filter.

My motorcycles never had a filter. They usually needed rebuilding due to cylinder wear before running 25,000 miles even though they never left paved roads and had oil changes at least every 1,000 miles. Also, two of them had efficient oil filtration.

My 1988 Dodge Caravan, 2000 Dodge Durango and 2006 Dodge Dakota (I like Dodge vehicles, OK?) exceeded 200,000 miles without any attention except for filter and oil changes. They have very efficient filters - I am convinced.

My point is that all manufacturers started putting air filters on their cars in the 1930's. What changed? I suspect it was because they all realized it was beneficial for the operation and life of the car. Both of my A's have the K&N Highboy filter and run great, certainly better than the Air Mazes they had when I bought them.
