Gap should be .018 ...

We used Champion L 63R with .020 gap.

Re: Is anybody running a Vertex mag and if you are what spark plugs are you running
It kind of depends on whose heads and what reach spark plug you need? I run a vertex mag with Navarro heads - I prefer to run the NGK B6L plug. I pretty much run NGK plugs in everything I build.

The Lodge R49 or the Champion L62R would be great because of them being a retracted electrode but I only found them in England I wish I could find them here in the states My heads are so worked I need a retracted plug for clearance Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Just put two gaskets on a B6L - should do the trick!

Two gaskets will alter the heat range....

Italian cars such as Alfa and Fiat use Lodge plugs. You may be able to source Lodge plugs from one of these retailers.

Re: Is anybody running a Vertex mag and if you are what spark plugs are you running
How is that possible? Heat range is determined by the length of the porcelain and the electrode projection from the end of the plug body. Raising the plug by adding additional washers is no different than how some Flathead heads are machined to place the plug deeper into the chamber or farther from the chamber if what you wrote is accurate any deviation from a given dimension of the plug in the chamber will then alter the heat range. Lengthening the path to the seat with more washers or thicker washers will impede heat transfer. It also reduces the amount of thread in contact with the head, further impeding heat transfer. Race engines usually use solid copper washers instead of the rolled ones because they transfer heat better. |

You can believe anything you choose to.
There are also several theories on how the earth was formed but no positive concrete scientific evidence to confirm any except individual belief. Ron is a very good friend of mine so we are only going to discuss this sometime over many beers. Not here. |

Re: Is anybody running a Vertex mag and if you are what spark plugs are you running
When I use additional washers under my plugs I use solid copper as Pete explained above that's the reason I have not experienced any change in heat range by using washers good old copper is great transfer of heat. I learned something by accident thanks for the info Pete
Now about the many beers it just takes one for me to get happy.

Re: Is anybody running a Vertex mag and if you are what spark plugs are you running
I'll supply the beer - as long as I get to see BOTH of my friends at the same time! Good info on multiple gaskets - though I think the original poster is going to have to decide what he wants to do. He can go to a shorter reach plug than the heads were originally designed to use (but the chambers have been modified - so the thread length is now less) . . . and if he can find the correct plug and heat range, that should work. If not, he may want to use two copper gaskets to raise the plug threads out of the chamber. Me, I would probably use two copper gaskets instead of the rolled ones - and run B6L plugs.
PS: Pete, we may need to drink "Toottie Fruities" like at Bonneville. |

Re: Is anybody running a Vertex mag and if you are what spark plugs are you running
To bolster the points. A friend that holds a flathead record at Bonneville told me that he was going to switch from solid copper head gaskets to composite because the copper gaskets transfer too much heat from the combustion area. Heat is power in the right place.
