V8 oil pump in a model A ford
Hello,
Saw a great article (SOSS Mag) on how to modify a V8 oil pump to a Model A Ford for more oil pressure and flow. I know a couple of shops do it and they want $300.00. I know I can do the work. I would buy it, if I had money to burn. The one thing I can't get a answer to is what year oil pump (30s-48) (49-50) (51-53). Does anyone know? Does it matter? Thanks for your time. Marty |

Flathead V8 pump is what is used, unless you want to buy a Stipe custom aluminum pump...the cat's meow , an expensive cat's meow, but worth every hundred, eh My current build contains a 59A pump, but if you know how then you can modify the newer flathead pumps also. My best advice to you, buy Jim B book (a member here). Besides his dry humor and great life experiences expressed, he also explains (with pictures for guys like me ) how oil pumps are modified, etc, etc.... He also gives source referenced at the back of his book and a friend entered there did my oil pump mods. BTW...not all flathead oil pumps are equal ! When Cliff explained/showed me the differences and what mattered....I knew that this was tooo important an item to be 'experimenting' with. He did a wonderful job on mine. He is also an old 4e4 guy and great machinist. |

I'd also like to know how and what to machine as I have a Lathe and Mill and would enjoy making a few.

Re: V8 oil pump in a model A ford
The early V8 pumps used the same size gears as the A pump ---so you probably want to look at the post war series of pumps with the pressure regulator in the pump

Re: V8 oil pump in a model A ford
If your put this in to a pressurized B model engine it is well worth the time doing the V8 pump
but for standard oiling A model just turning down the shaft and opening up the passages is all you need I would look improving the sump baffles also standard A models suffer from lack of oil on hard right hand cornering Last edited by colin1928; 06-23-2015 at 05:44 AM. |

Re: V8 oil pump in a model A ford
Can you set the PSI on these? I noticed that last post stated "pre set 18#". What is the PSI on a late V8 flatty oil pump. Never messed with one of those engines. I am going to get the book too. Sounds good. This isn't the first time I have seen someone recommend it.

Re: V8 oil pump in a model A ford
My highly modified model B engine has a V8 oil pump. The problem was that it set about 3/8" off the bottom of the oil pan and starved for oil on hard turns. I bought Jim Brierly's book, Bangers and Me and saw how to create baffles to keep the oil from moving away from the pump. Worked good.

Re: V8 oil pump in a model A ford
I have the Stipe pump in mine and had to add the baffles to the pan to correct for the loss of oil pressure on hard right turns. I used a electronic bore scope to check that there was at least 1/4" between the baffles and the counterweights on my Burlington crank.

Re: V8 oil pump in a model A ford
Here's another question. Do you need to put more oil in since the V8 oil pump has a higher output. Is there a chance more is going out then what can return?
