Polishing chrome question
What do you guys use to polish chrome bumpers that are not pitted but are oxidized and would shine again if polished?

Re: Polishing chrome question
I used the grey rouge with a sewn wheel on some 71 Chevy Caprise convertible interior trim pieces and it did pretty well, then finished with a white rouge on a un-sewn wheel. It's all in the technique and follow a couple of tricks of the trade I was taught. PM your number and I can call you and share what I learned, easier just to tell you than type it all out!!

Re: Polishing chrome question
I have had good luck with Quick-Glo chrome polish. I was amazed what it did for an old set of hub caps the other day. I think I found it on Amazon.

Re: Polishing chrome question
Seth try Simichrome polish, I use it on the nickle coatings on the T and various chrome on other vehicles.
Let us know how you make out with the bumpers. |

Re: Polishing chrome question
Seth-
I 'polished' the chrome windshield-surround on my '33 coupe with elbow grease, Bon-Ami & sponge, and six hours solid time. (Bon-Ami "hasn't scratched yet"slogan for so many decades always comes through and true. (odd, it's been changed ) Bon-Ami is chemically free; 100% natural-nature.(save your lungs) If your brightwork is damage-free, it'll look new with Bon-Ami. (My chrome is not damage-free, but cleaned up quite nicely. Give it a try; soak sponge, (dampen chrome) squeeze, sprinkle Bon-Ami on wet sponge, 'apply'. ***** Last edited by highbeams; 02-17-2023 at 01:09 PM. Reason: clarity |

Re: Polishing chrome question
Lots of good information and tips here. I have a couple of "driver" cars that need the chrome polished up.

Re: Polishing chrome question
Rubbing compound works excellent! And it's cheaper to buy than the small tubes of "chrome polish". I've been using it for many years. You can do it by hand with a clean cloth, or use a buffer. It's more work doing it by hand, but produces excellent results. The buffer is just quicker.
I'm not a big fan of using 0000 steel wool. It'll leave light swirl marks in the chrome, much like black paint after it's been washed. Here's a few pieces I've done just in the last month, all using rubbing compound. Last edited by cjshaker; 02-17-2023 at 02:37 PM. |

Re: Polishing chrome question
I bought a 64 Fairlane with a heavily oxidized rear bumper that I was sure had to be re-plated. I used #7 Chrome and Metal Polish and it came out great. And it stayed that way for the 3 years I had the car.l

Re: Polishing chrome question
Steel wool and diesel fuel worked wonders on the cheap "Korean war chrome" on my 52 Merc. Plus hours of labour but I work pretty cheap on those kind of projects.

Re: Polishing chrome question
The front bumper on my ‘51 had some surface rust, and I used Diet Coke and aluminum foil to clean it up. I was amazed at how much better it looked. Just crinkle up the foil, get it wet with the Diet Coke, and scrub the rusty area. There are a couple YouTube videos showing it.

Re: Polishing chrome question
I used some Turtle Wax Tar and bug remover on our '41 bumpers and it shined our bumpers up great. It was probably 25 yrs old. new stuff doesn't seem to work as well.

Re: Polishing chrome question
3M Finesse-it polish is great for that purpose as well as a final polish for paint work.
