I think the OP might be looking for recommended shops that Barn members have used.

A full time, professional workshop is unlikely to want to do a job like that IMO. They would need a mandrel to hold the flywheel to start with unless they have a golly whopper big lathe. Because they wouldn't be able to see any repeat work for it, they would expect you to pay for it, then for the machining. I am lucky that one of our club members is a retired machinist but he still has a good workshop. Machining a flywheel would cost about $A100 ($US73).
Our club has a tool library where members can borrow a tool rather than buy one. A mandrel might be worth considering for that.

But that wasn't asked. I would look for an automotive machine shop. For recomendations I might ask a model A club.

It's what is sounded like to me, but any engine rebuilding shop can do it.

All things considered it's probably more cost effective to buy one of the Burtz flywheels at this point in time. Surely wouldn't want to go to even an automotive machine shop who's not experienced with Model A's.

I think any good machinist knows how to machine metal to your specifications. Why would they need to be experienced with the model A?

Not necessarily, my 36" lathe has a chunk that can be taken out of the bed to allow large items like flywheels to be worked on.

Exactly.

Any competent machinist can mount, center and cut at any depth. Mine was cut on a CNC. It was layed flat on the bed, centered, and programed for the cut. Mine was not lightened, just resurfaced to a clean surface. It doesn't matter if your cutting .062" depth, or 3", metal is metal is metal.

I had my flywheel surfaced and balanced by Edelbrock in L.A. and didn't worry a bit.

Well I have found a source for what I want so problem is solved. I live in a major metropolitan area and I asked everybody I could think of and very simply nobody still in business was willing to tackle it. Everybody that used to do it is retired or dead. And believe it or not Pete, my dad worked at Hill auto parts in the 70's (up to his death in 77) and I knew Jim Burns the owner of Hill Machine quite well and he and Dan (the cylinder head guru) did a lot of work for me. Jim retired years ago and I no longer have any contact with them.

Well, even if I couldn't help, it's always neat to run into someone that remembers the "olden dayz"....lol

Jim was one of my customers when I had my shop in Ballard.

What was your shop Pete? I lived in Ballard for 43 years and graduated from Ballard High (don't hold that against me). Chances are that we met in a past life.
