ammeter/generator questions

I know this type of thing has probably been posted a bunch of times, but I figured it would be easier to just ask instead of searching and searching. So, Ive ben having a few issues with my ammeter and generator output and would like some advice/troubleshooting tips. When the engine is idle, the ammeter reads 0, when the lights are on or i honk the hork(while idle or engine off), the ammeter dips to about -10. When i rev the engine or accelerate, the ammeter shoots way up, past the end of gauge, also the lights burn brighter. Im not really sure what all is normal and what isnt, though I know its definitely not suppose to shoot off the scale like it does. Anyone know what the potential problems may be and how I would go about remedying them? Any input anyone has would be great. Thank you.

1. Idling at zero is normal
2. Discharging is normal when items are turned on.
3. That high of a charge is not normal. It could be set charging to high, which is adjusting the brush inside of the generator cover. Remove the generator cover and the top brush (3rd brush) will move up or down. Try moving that and see if that makes a difference in the charge rate at the ammeter. If not, then probably somethings else wrong with the generator.

Also give us some voltage readings at idle and higher RPMs.

How old is your battery? A weak/old battery will discharge at a quicker rate, and require more to recharge out of the generator on a regular basis.
Disconnect your battery overnight and check the voltage in the morning.

This was the subject of our lunch break today..a coworker has a 49 Merc..and he said you can motor the generator and check the amps,,,he said it will take the same amount of current to motor it as it will generate and by adjusting the third brush get the exact amp you want,,,sounded interesting

I don't think so.

With no load on it(if you disconnect the belt), the generator will not take very much current to motor.

If you leave the belt hooked up, and try to turn the engine over by motoring the generator, you will likely draw an excess of current.
