Stupid me!
I jammed my starter drive against my flywheel. For the first time in 15 years. By rocking the car in high back and forth the bendix gear released. So I said to myself hummm. Let me pull the starter out just to inspect. And the only problem I found so far is the starter switch doesn't hit the brass terminal squarely. I can see the little bright spot on the terminal. I don't think that it could be my problem with the starter jamming up. So far I jumped the starter with 6 volts on the bench to check the shaft and it's true. Bendix shaft is clean with a light coat of oil on it.
What do the experts think

Re: Stupid me!
Check the flywheel teeth. Also, is the battery in good condition, with a full charge?

Re: Stupid me!
Also, worn starter bushings? Also starter is more prone to jamming the Bendix if the spark not is not properly retarded when hitting the starter button.

Re: Stupid me!
Is the shaft bent? After rereading I see the shaft appears to run true.
Is the switch an original, or a new replacement? I have had a replacement hangup. Also the insulation shielding the copper strip, or the paper button wear out. Last edited by Brentwood Bob; 04-25-2017 at 12:33 PM. |

Re: Stupid me!
The flywheel looks good and I have 6.2Volts going to the starter. Also I have a extra ground wire from a starter bolt to the battery. I'm going to say it was a fluke. That the bendix jammed. But still the question I have is the starter switch doesn't have a full contact with the starter terminal. When I push it down. I'm looking to get a solid contact between the two. Shall I try bending the copper strip?

Re: Stupid me!
Engine will tend to stop at either of two positions. You can find and check those spots by rotating the engine with the spark plugs removed.
In the old days when a flywheel started jamming, they would mark the flywheel/ring gear position and then would use a punch to remove the flywheel and "re-set" it in a 90 degree position to get away from those two spots. Today we buy new ring gears. Joe K
