Re: generator technical
I had the same problem on my Galaxie and replaced the regulator. Bingo, now the generator charge reads correctly and on board voltage meter no longer constantly showing the same charge level.
Did you check the charge level with a multimeter..a digital one? |

Re: generator technical
had that happen when regulator went south many times.if I did not hear belt squeal it would flip off and carry on spinning until it killed battery.that was my redneck method to check generator also.the memories

Re: generator technical
Pull the alternator and regulator off and have it checked out. No sense screwing around with it.

Re: generator technical
I agree with Paul. If it's not charging correctly you're on borrowed time. When I bought my 55 bird I was 85 miles from home. A friend who was a first rate mechanic took me up. I told him when I took my exit and went East he could keep on south for home. He followed me all the way. He said my taillights were so dim he could hardly see them when the VR dropped in and went back to charging. Got home ok, but the next morning it wouldn't crank so I cut it pretty close. Pretty easy to pull both out and know for sure what you've got.

Re: generator technical
altinator is in and charging 15v
one wire alt had to be moved forward 3/4 " to line up pulleys and the adjustment bar needed a curve so it didn't hit alt fan longer bolts and spacers I had laying around so to get my generator system going reg was $107.(returned) new one wire CHROME( non chrome $160 out of stock) alt$200. installed |

Re: generator technical
Good for you for thinking it through. Some of the one-wire alternators have to be revved a little to charge after starting the engine every time, some don't. Don't be alarmed if you have to rev it a little to get it charging.
