Default F-1 column revisited

Okay, got to look at son's truck today. It has the 48-52 column in it yet. It was a column shift. The shift tube was removed, and the turn signals switch is gone. The steering wheel is a 3 spoke with a small hub, and the column has a large hub. I bought a 53-55 wheel for it. I hope the 48-52 shaft is a spline like the wheel, and not a keyed taper. I couldn't see that, it's in a dark storage building.
Man, I want to get that thing out and running again!

As I recall, the 53-on taper and splines are different than F-1's. Mine came with a later wheel, and the PO had added some spacers and just jammed it on.

The "large hub" description sounds like a later column?

F1 columns did not have a turn signal as far as I know. Turn signals were added with the F100 column.

It appears to me like a PO put a later jacket on the 48-52 column. When my son and I first looked at the truck, it had a gold metalflake wheel on it. When we went to pick it up, it had this crusty old 3-spoke wheel that fit like shit, so to speak. I sort of looked today about using a 53-56 column, but there doesn't seem to be enough room for one as the y-block oil filter stuff is very close to the gear, even with a right angle adaptor for the oil filter assy. already on it. It sounds like this is some kind of a cob job, but the actual conversion was done MANY years age, and it was actually a pretty good job. Anyway lots of modernization is in order to correct some old out of date problems. I am looking forward to doing this, but the son has many other priorities.

So if an F-1 is tapered, does that mean a '40 style wheel will fit? If so, this is exciting news for me. I thought the F-1 had the splines...

The F1 has splines and a taper. The 40 only has a taper and keyway. The later 53-55 wheels will fit on the F1 shaft but will have to change column mast to make it look right. I used the 53-55 column mast to get turn signals then used a repro 40 wheel and modified the hole in it to work on my F1 box.
