Default '40 Master cylinder

I was thinking about ordering a new master cylinder from C&G Ford. Anyone have any opinions on these as far as quality? Thanks.

Does it say they are American made? I bought one from Macs a while ago ' American made' it's in my daily driver no problems.

Have you considered rebuilding the one you have?

I had an original sleeved and then rebuilt it. Works great. There are a couple of Co.s in Hemmings that will put the sleeves in. I have heard that NAPA sells rebuilding kit??

Napa also sells remanufactured units quite reasonably. I was fortunate enough to actually get my hands on three concourse correct 1940 cylinders.
Be certain to request "remanufactured" vs. rebuilt. There is a huge difference.

No, I do not. However, any parts counter salesperson should be able to look it up easily enough.

I'm literally under the car right now and have the Master Cyl. out. There is brown ooze coming out the end where the boot is and push rod goes into. I took out the cotter pin to remove the clevis but it's frozen like hell ! I don't want to bang on it too much.

The Master says.....Wagner Lockheed. Good or bad ?

Thx

Wagner Lockheed looks good to me. Check and see if it is rebuildable - no pitting.

19Fordy is referring to the bore inside the MC, that is what needs to be checked for pitting. The condition of the outside is not to important unless it is extremely bad.

I bought the USA made M/C for my '39 p/u from Joe's Antique Auto. It was a Wagner if I remember correctly. The new off shore M/C that the PO had installed wouldn't always release, locking up the brakes. The new USA one works fine.

I just took the whole thing apart. I don't see any pitting, but rather a varnish build up on many of the parts. I assume from the car sitting around for about 27 years !! I would say a light honing is required.

Outside cast-in lettering is Wagner Lockheed and FE-1061 Made in USA. If it was the original I would assume it would say "Ford" on it !

Just use gasoline to clean out the fluid tank ? It's kind of gooey, but not REAL bad !

I'm heading down to NAPA shortly after lunch to see what they have for a rebuild kit.

Thx for the help on this ! Appreciated.

Bat....I'll check out Joe's online also.

Well......very interesting visit to NAPA. They have new, remaned and rebuild kit for the '40 MC. The reman'd would be an original rebuilt..........the new one would be from a China casting. I asked him what he'd do.........he said no way would he buy the new one. The castings are from a mixture who knows what ! They've had problems with them. He said go with the reman, as it has a 3 year or 36,000 miles warranty. If I rebuild it.....no warranty. The rebuild kit is $18 and reman is $56, so for $40 bucks more I get the 3 year warranty. He's going to order both new and the reman and no cost to me until I've looked at them both. Parts are in at 7:30 am Tuesday.

Brake fluid is water soluble so wash brake parts in soap and water for best results .
