Question y-block drain plug

on the righr side(passerger) just below the front freeze plug on a 292 engine there is a drain plug ? When I removed it to install a second temp.
gauge sending unit nothing came out ! No water, no oil, nello !!
It looks clean, no rust. upon futher inspection there is about 3/8's inch
open space then a solid wall ? I belive this is the water jacket that cools
the cylinders and pistons and water should come flowing out ??
There is plenty of water (coolent) and the engine does'nt overheat , yet ?
Any guesses on what could cause this ? Is this a water issue or is
this a oil passage chamber ??

Usually these are plugged with either rust or dirt. I would stick a screwdriver in the hole and try to clear it.

If you want to add a second water temp sending unit, I have seen them put in the passenger side head at the rear near the distributor. There is usually a freeze out (Core) plug there. It can be removed and a new plug, drilled for the temp sensor, put in. The TBird parts suppliers can supply new plugs already drilled (There are two sizes)

I could never understand why they wanted to know the temperature at the back of the head. I drilled and tapped the intake right behind the thremostate where the water is the hottest. The metal is thin, but I have done two now and they both work great.
