Default cleaning spark plugs

I’ll chime in, I’m considering about swapping out my champion spark plugs but not sure which brand to go with (Motorcraft, Autolite, NGK) to run a higher temp spark plug. My mechanic believes I have a weak spark and recommends rebuilding my distributor at some point to.

Are hotter plugs better? I can literally start and drive the car and those plugs are cool to the touch when I touch them. Whereas before I remember the last set of Autolite I had were hot.

Any suggestions? Btw my mechanic said that he gaps his plugs to .035” instead of the manufacturer 0.025”. It will detonate the spark longer since todays gas has more additives.

The criteria for a hot plug is not how hot it feels to the touch, although that may also be a fact, but rather, how hot the electrodes remain up to the point of firing again. How it works is the depth of the insulator is shallow for a cold plug, reflecting the short distance that heat has to travel to reach the cooler exterior. The hotter plug, with a deep recess, will stay cleaner, resisting fouling because of the heat.

I gap plugs at .025" in a flathead. I have had failures on the HT side of the ignition. Having reasonable gaps keeps the loads down on the HT side. (HT = High Tension). I use Autolite 216s in my 59A motor.

Thanks for the response. Maybe I should consider gapping to 0.025” instead of 0.035” again.

What brand and model of spark plugs y’all find the best for a 34’ head?
