Cool Carb Heat Shield Experience?

I have a spacer under mine. It made a difference other than the heat sink from hot motor shut down. The gas still boils out and you crank a little to fire up after setting a short while....Mark

Thanks for the reply flatford8, I'm inquiring because on some other forums I read about this specific brand (cool carb) melting. It wasn't on a flathead though.

All will help the problem of heat soak - some more than others.
You can make your own reflector/deflector quite easily using a carb base gasket as a template for the holes. Just having the two gaskets between the carb and manifold will help, but with a deflector in between them, better.
You can also make your own spacer using phenolic resin or even wood. Use a dense hardwood like Oak, Elm, Ironwood etc.

Mine is a phenolic one from Bob Shewman. Some type of heat shield under the carb may work better to stop the heat from the motor getting to the float bowl. I haven’t had any issues with a vapor lock situation, but it doesn’t often get above 90* here in Southern Maine........ Mark

I have one on my 53 f-100 with merc flat head , it works fine,bought the cool carb spacer two years ago at york, NSRA show

Here is what they look like. I have never run one on a flathead, but have used similar heat shields on other vechiles with good results.

I have the one shown on right above on my 35 fordor sedan. It may be helping some to keep the carb base and fuel bowl cooler, but the real problem with vapor lock on my car is coming from the 47-48 fuel pump with glass bowl sitting too close to intake deck and CI head. When engine temps get above 190°F, I can see the alcohol boiling in the glass bowl, and that vapor produces enough pressure in the fuel line to stop the flow of gas to the carburetor.
I have worked out the details on changes needed to prevent this, but like everything else that needs to be done, it will happen eventually I hope.

my 56 merc did have the same problem put 1/2 inch phenolic spacer under my 4 barrel trouble went away, also using std fuel pump

I try to keep non alcohol fuel in my older cars which is available locally and whether it eliminates vapor locks I'm not sure but I haven't had that problem .
