1936 1-1/2 Ton Panel Project
I rescued this 1935 Model 51 panel truck from a collapsing barn. Not sure what I want to do with it, so for now it waits until my 1935 1-1/2 demonstrator is finished and so is the Model 51 book. Thought some of you might like to see this truck.
I'm searching for information on the Model 51 10 gallon gas tank option. Anyone have a panel truck with the 10 gallon gas tank in the cab? At this point I's be happy with a few pictures of an original example. |

That is a really nice panel. I too like the big panel trucks. I have worn out two copies of Wagner's FTS'05 over the last 35 years or so. Can't wait to start wearing out YOUR new book!

Re: 1936 1-1/2 Ton Panel Project
Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I'll find pictures of the recovery from the barn. This truck sat in the barn on the end with no side so the passenger side got all the weather and is in rougher shape. It's intact but needs a ton of work. The rear bed is mostly gone as the canvas top didn't survive and rain did it's work to the interior. The roof was resting on the front windshield so it required jacking up and cutting away the roof and then dragging it out.

Here is the truck in the barn before the roof let go. Then what it looked like when I started and a few pics of some of the work that it took to free it up and finally it's first light of day. I'll post another batch to continue the story.

Re: 1936 1-1/2 Ton Panel Project
It was a bit like giving birth. The truck reluctantly came out but eventually it was up on a flatbed and in my driveway. It was a mess inside which has mostly been cleaned up. My goal was primarily to save this from destruction and it's now safe and dry. It has a 1937 flathead engine frozen solid. I've collected some extra parts too.

Re: 1936 1-1/2 Ton Panel Project
It was a long three days, but I think worth the effort. The pictures make the truck look a bit better than it really is, but you get the idea at least. I'm not sure I will be the one to get this back on the road, but at least I achieved my goal so it's not lost to the scrapper.
Just FIY - Ford produced under 1,400 of these Model 51 panel trucks in 1936 and not very many survive today. This might be partly because the panel body is wood framed and the canvas top decays quickly and in a wet environment, the truck just dissolves. A similar panel truck one rolled of the assembly line in May 1936 as the 3,000,000th Ford truck. It would be so neat to see this one restored to look the same way as a tribute. |

That is one cool panel. I'd love to see it back on the road as you don't see those, at all. I love the "unusual" and "seldom seen". AND thanks for your presentation at the Eastern National 35-36 presentation. |

Re: 1936 1-1/2 Ton Panel Project
Rare is the period panel truck that is free of major issues with the wood inside the sheet metal.

Rockfla - Glad you got something from the '35-'36 truck accessory equipment presentation at the ENM. I have all that information and much more in my upcoming book.

Love the postcard,, the stance is excellent. Way up firm and high. .... Yes, a tribute is in order.
