I don't throw anything away that I can use or sell. The best thing to do is have a bunch or shelves and store parts orgainized in mouse proof containers. If something won't be used or needed for a very long time then store it in the attic if you have one, as long as the attic heat won't damage the part. I'm thinking of making a shelf that sets over the top of my Model A, to free up some floor space. It just seems like you can never have enough garage space or shelves to store the parts.

Unless you're going to use it within a reasonable amount of time give it away, sell it, or trash it. Whatever you do, don't become a hoarder of useless articles.

If you have more than you can organize and therefore locate when needed you have more than you will ever use. I got a bigger place but am determined not to fill it up and am moving the other direction and getting rid of stuff. I like having a little space and filling it means you no longer have any!

I'm narrowing things down to only two to three times what I'm likely to do in my remaining lifetime!

That would be better than having a Snap On Van crash and dump its load into your garage.

My rule of thumb is ... If I don't use the article for 2 years I probably never will ... Sort things out ... Have one heck of a yard sale ( have a BBQ with that and sell some hotdogs , That will get you more people , buck each) ... Then after the sale pack up the stuff you don't sell and give or throw it away ........... Unless it is "A" related of course .. that would have to be a keeper.

I started with one 20 foot shipping container. I have since added three 40 foot containers. They work great not too expensive and they are pest proof. Call it a sickness.

My barn reproduces parts when I am not looking, and the stuff grows like weeds. Several years ago I made a big pile of parts from 60's vintage fords, with the intention of a dump run. My son suggested ebay, and when the pile was gone, I had $2,000 in my pocket. Last year the barn was full again, mostly model A stuff, and I sold a Uhaul truck load to one guy for a nice price. I could have gotten more on ebay, but a single transaction no hassle deal was better.

I find....the minute I throw someting out or give/sell it.....I need it! I think there is a law on that.

Sometimes though, you just can't keep everything cause yer never going to use the stuff.

For me, if someone has a need and can use the part (and I don't need it) they are welcome to it.

We accumulate so much too (which is one of my 2012 New Year resolutions) and we actually haul off so much to the scrap metal place that I purchased a specific trailer just to store and haul off stuff in. That is helped us because at the moment we are ready too discard it, we do. Two of the best organizers of their Model A stuff I know is Will Cronkrite and Rainmaker Ron Cloat. I guess their memory is just better than mine knowing where they last put it!

While not specific to what to do with extra parts, here is the 5S's of Shop Organization that I am going to work at implimenting for us this year...
Sort - Identify what you use, get rid of what you don't; take everything in question and put it in a storage area for a few weeks. If you miss it, bring it back and assign a place. If you don't miss it in 8 weeks, discard it.

Straighten (set in order) - Put everything in it's place, usually at the point of use, grinders at the welding bench, wood tools at the wood bench, etc. Limit walking for things; Consider frequency of use, everyday tools close and in the open, once a month in a closet or high on a shelf, etc.

Sanitize - Clean EVERYTHING & EVERYWHERE, get rid of horizontal surfaces. they collect junk and dust.

Standardize - Make the practice universal to all operations in the four walls, use visual management like shadow boards and labels to make sure everyone understands, think like a visitor. Make it intuitive and it will be easier to put things back. Use shadow boards to see size and shape of those things that go on the walls. This helps spot missing items.

Sustain - create a maintenance plan, schedule regular assessments, actions and follow-up, create accountability. I like pictures of the clean work space that show where everything goes. It compells putting things back and reminds where they belong.

Put the junk in one garage - take pictures as you store it away
in case you want to sell some of it ...

Work on your Model A's in the other garage ...

Problem solved ...

I have 3 garages, one for project car storage, one for parts & motorcycles, and the last one is where I do my actual work. When the price of scrap was way up a couple years ago I hauled off over 8,000 lbs of bell housings, trans cases, rough rims etc. You have to figure out what you need to keep and what would make good trading stock.

Between Model T's, Model A's, 50s Fords, early Corvette and Harley Panheads it's essential to keep parts segregated so they don't get mixed together.

My son-in-law (not a car person) has encouraged me to label it or make it leave my possesion. After helping a club widow label and organize a club garage sale,I can under stand the seriousness of such an event...especially to a family member that has no idea what they are looking at or what to do with it!!

Here is a picture of one of my buildings. I canned and labeled all of the model A parts that would fit in coffee cans or whatever would fit on the shelves. I kept the canned parts organized in catagory. I hung whatever I could from the trusses . XXX
