I think you might be right... Maybe I shouldn't park it next to a Studebaker...

Steam? If it's not on the ground, or in the engine or rad or exhaust...

Hi Jeff, I've been without internet, phone and cable TV service for the last three days (Florida storms)... but now I'm back. To answer your question, steam would still have to exit the engine for it to lose water. Someone had suggested putting dye in the coolant, to be able to see where it might be exiting. That'll most likely be my next attempt to solve the mystery... maybe this weekend... meanwhile, the Flathead fun continues.

Could be going out exhaust while you are running and you would never see it.Pressure test

I've stood behind the car with my hands at the exhaust pipes while the engine is running, with the throttle pulled out to emulate a cruising rpm and, no moisture is exiting... Today being Saturday, I'm planning to spend some time messin' with the '39 CS to see if I can determine what the problem is, and how to correct it...

Good luck.

After all these years, the flatty can still get you to scratch your head and make you think. It helps offset senior moments it's the cars way of providing you marvel mystery oil for your brain.

Yup, this car is really starting to aggravate me... I just took her out for a run, got caught in a Florida downpour, pulled her into the garage and the overflow is pushing out foam... I did see some water on the top of the distributor, it was warm and had a faint odor of antifreeze... The rest of the engine compartment was wet as well, complements of the rain... Now I'm wondering if water is escaping from one or both water pumps at the pulley shaft...? Thankfully I've got a set of rebuilt water pumps so... maybe later today I'll swap them out... I am going to see if I can get some dye to put in the radiator first...

I went to the auto parts store and got some dye to put in the cooling system in the '39 CS. According to the instructions, after the car is brought up to normal operating temperature (between 170 -190 degrees), any fluid leakage will be visible under a UV light... Following the instructions (which is normally what I do after every other attempt fails). I still can’t detect leakage from anywhere. I'm not having any fun... Next step... gasoline and a match... Time for a Car-B-Cue...

WAIT...hold that match! This could save the frustration, and could easily be bolted-in over a weekend. DD

Hey Vic: Time to get out of the garage, have a cool one and forget your problem for awhile, then at 3am you will awaken, study the problem, and devise a solution, Maybe even tomorrow at 3am. Good luck. Jim...

I took a very enjoyable, albeit not topless, cruise this morning down to Sarasota to check out a '57 Ford F-100 for a friend of mine. I drove the '51 F-1 and it performed flawlessly... Maybe it cut me some slack because it's my birthday... The engine temp stayed between 160 and 180 degrees, cruisin' at between 65 & 75 MPH on the highway and sitting at just about every traffic light on the secondary roads. Even better, the F-1 did not burn a drop of oil... Best of all, my friend bought the '57 F-100. I told him I'd be happy to drive it up to LI but, he didn't take me up on my offer... The '57 is a beautifully restored vehicle and it drives like a dream. I know my friend will have many years of enjoyment with the truck.
