Oil dipstick
Found a number on the dipstick today while cleaning it up, assume it is too ensure it is to ensure you have the correct dipstick for your engine.

Re: Oil dipstick
To me the only way to ensure that the engine has the correct dip stick is to fill it with the correct amount of oil and after a short run (to circulate the oil),
the level should match the stick.

Re: Oil dipstick
That's the way I checked mine. You never know what may have been swapped around over the years.

Re: Oil dipstick
Most 8BA family dipsticks are marked. Each oil pan uses a different part number and they are different lengths. The lengths are generally listed in the parts catalogs but I've found some that list the size of one part number and then a later or different book with list another. It helps to have all the parts books that affect the 8BA family of engines.
8A would indicate 8BA for Ford cars that used the first series oil pans. |

i would also do the same for filling with oil, understand that never know if this was even the correct dipstick for the engine without crossrefrencing numbers. I just never realised it had a number on it, as it had multiple layers of paint on it. Cheers Corey |

Re: Oil dipstick
To be sure your dipstick is correct, install four quarts of oil in a car without a filter, and five quarts with a filter. Mark "full" on the stick with a punch or chisel.

Re: Oil dipstick
Different year models and applications can have different capacities. The above capacity is correct for some but not all applications and year models. The 49 thru 51 Mercury applications lists the capacity at 5 quarts with a wet oil change and 6 quarts with a dry engine and filter housing. The 8RT family of V8 truck engines are likely the same but I don't have the shop manual for them.

Re: Oil dipstick
Cheers Guys,
Thoughts on installing a filter? I think if it's a good idea but would like to know your thoughts. Cheers Corey |
