Re: UHaul
Twice I tried to rent one. First time was when my truck arrived in the container from Southern California and wouldn't start. They wouldn't rent to me since my tow vehicle was a Ford Explorer (nevermind that U-Haul had installed the hitch on the Explorer). Wound up towing it with a tow strap the 5 miles home.
The second time I had engine problems 400 miles from home and there was no equipment available. Wound up towing it with a tow bar similar to the one Joop used in post #18.

The UHaul car hauler was $240." Question I had with your cost is how much gas did you use pulling a trailer with your pull rig. We purchased a trailer a couple of years ago and find that I get about 5 MPG less with my Chev pickup pulling a trailer. But anyway, it looks like you still had a good deal. Added gas may have been only a $100 or so.

Re: UHaul
As far as gas mileage went, the truck pulling the Model A and full of heavy household "stuff" got 12 miles per gallon of gasoline.

Re: UHaul
I used a u-haul to get my roadster home. It worked great. I found it was much less expensive to rent the trailer locally, drive it empty to get the car and then transport the car home. I don't recall the numbers, but a one-way haul cost quite a bit more.

Marc :
So I guess we have to add one more Model A to the total on the Cape. Seems funny I didn't hear you come over the bridge. |

That Artillery wheel on the right rear is worth a lot.

Re: UHaul
A UHaul trailer came with my Model A and I've been very happy with it.

Re: UHaul
I have used Uhaul quite a bit and like it. But I have had a couple of problems. I find that they do not like to rent if the car you are hauling is not on their list. In that case I put in a VW but I suppose that voids any insurance if there is a crash. The other problem I had was with the brakes. The master cylinder was froze up so there were no brakes. I told the agent about it when I dropped it off but he said they don't fix anything. He was just a hardware store. I guess some of the smaller dealers are more risky to rent from and are just jockeys rather than Uhaul reps.

Re: UHaul
I'd be nervous towing a Roadster or a Phaeton on an open trailer, unless maybe you backed the vehicle onto the trailer. Years ago a fellow near us lost his top towing a '29 Roadster down the road. Wind caught it and he didn't have the top secured any more than the original clamp screws. Boogered up the folding top frame pretty bad too

Re: UHaul
The quality of the UHaul store varies from location to location.
When I rented the auto transport from a store in Bloomington MN, the person wouldn't help me at all with loading the Model A. Yet, another store in Burnsville MN was very helpful with loading the Model A onto the transport. Marc |

Re: UHaul
I used one16 years ago and it was a very bad experience. I won't go into the detail but it was to go from Houston to San Antonio to pick up a Tudor. By the time all was said and one I could have hired a wrecker with a roll back had him dead-head to SA to pick it up and drop it off for less money.

Re: UHaul
I have used U-Haul a few times for different reasons without problems. When I reserved the trailer to bring the Tudor home, the U-Haul agent told me its weight and that it would be no problem.
Here is our Tudor outside our appraiser's house while on its way to our place. Note we did not use the U-Haul straps but substituted four tie downs instead. Before anybody makes a smart remark, the red tie down is not holding on the spokes, but is just passed through to allow the excess to be wrapped around the bumper. |

Re: UHaul
I used one from the cape to worcester. Straps fell off the wheels but the car stayed on the trailer. Thank God. Used it again from NY to worcester and cranked the straps and had no issues.

Re: UHaul
I used a U-Haul when I purchased my Model A and hauled it from Des Moines to Davenport, IA. The only issue I had was the trailer was behind some plowed snow so it was a little challenging to get out. And that it was -15 deg F when I picked the car up so strapping it down was a memorable experience!
