Default Can't stop fuel bowl from leaking

I put a new cork gasket in and no mater how tight I try to make it I get a drip. The old cork gasket was falling apart and did not leak. I put the screen on top then the gasket then the bowl - help. it drips on the exhaust.

Try a neoprene gasket instead of the cork.

Are you sure all the old gasket was removed and gasket surface clean. The bowl does appear cocked.

Billy,
The secret is not in the tightness. The tighter you turn the wheel, the more the housing will distort.
Take it apart and see if and how badly the housing is distorted, then try to flatten the housing and start again, but turn it only just tight enough, no more.
Good luck

That's why I use the iron bowl, NEVER any trouble & does a fine job filtering.

Just to make sure from your description, you are putting the screen into the recess on the glass first and then the gasket on top of the screen and then inserting the entire assembly up into the metal housing. Is this correct?

Okay something some might think is so simple is not. First I'm sure I over tightened the thumb screw as it dripped I used pliers each day to achieve another turn which now I know is wrong and I can see why. I don't think the case is warped. Also I put the screen inside the case first not on top of the glass. Sooooo, I put a new gasket in, put the screen on top of the glass first and only hand tighten, I will check for drips tomorrow, thanks

Thousands of vintage cars & tractors operated successfully for years with proper original glass bowl assemblies.

Glass bowls can work great when installed properly with correct fitting screens, correct fitting gaskets, all assembled on proper fitting gas bowl assemblies.

Most problems are caused by "older" off brand, re-pro Model A gas bowls that leak, are dangerous, & do not work well; however, Bratton's & maybe others, have good non-leaking gas bowl assemblies just in case you may want to try a new functional one.

If you have a "real" original, or one new from Bratton's or another supplier, try this:

1. Look at the top of the glass bowl which has an inner circular recess designed to receive the screen, whereby the screen sits lower than the very top outer rim of the glass bowl; hence, the glass bowl can contact the gasket, not the screen, & not leak through the screen.

2. If the screen does not fit in this recess, it is not the proper screen & it "will" leak -- carefully trimming with scissors can work in emergencies.

3. Make sure the center of the screen has a proper sized concentric hole to fit "snugly" on the protruding upper metal part of the metal filter assembly -- if it does not fit snugly, dirt can bypass the screen through minor orifices around this opening.

4. Press the screen on to the upper protruding metal part of the filter assembly. The screen should now be centered & stay in place if fitting snugly.

5. Fit the filter gasket into the recess of the upper assembly, directly under & on the bottom side of the upper screen & slightly tighten the circular nut on the bail below after installing the glass.

6. If you have the proper metal filter assembly, the proper sized screen, & proper sized gasket, the gasket will be sandwiched between the upper recessed metal & the lower outer protruding glass lip of the bowl ............. & the screen should be sitting in the bowl's glass recess & should not be clamped & forcefully compressed against the upper metal or against the outer lip of the glass below.

7. When properly installed, finger tightening is all that is needed; & FWIW, the neoprene gasket will last longer than cork if the filter is disassembled often for cleaning.

Hope this helps.

So which is it guys the screen on the glass first or pushed up in the the metal body first, two different instructions given or is it dependent on which type of assembly you have?

screen on glass, gasket on screen, then assemble into body. Re-read post 11. also check up in the body for gasket remenant.

Maybe try to remember the fuel filter bowl screen location by looking at it in this simple way.

A. Imagine placing a head gasket on a Model A block.

B. Imagine placing a layer of 6 x 6 x 6/6 welded wire fabric layer, (6" squares of 6 gauge wire used to reinforce concrete slabs), on top of your head gasket.

C. Imagine placing the head on top of the welded wire fabric.

D. The bottom of the head never touches the gasket & never creates a positive seal between the bottom of the head & the top of the head gasket.

E. When the engine cranks, air passes between the metal bottom of the head & the metal mesh on top of the head gasket, along the small openings created by the welded wire fabric.

F. The screen has to be in contact with the "recess" provided in the glass bowl so it allows the gasket to contact the glass.

G. Remember that gasoline is very thin, not like oil, & not like water; hence, it can penetrate very small openings.

H. For example, gasoline can pass through the tiny holes in the fuel screen filter; but water cannot & stays in the bowl ........... try it & watch water bead up on top of the filter screen.

Again, for safety's sake, just hope this helps

Bill, you never sound smart ass'd. We few that dont know how to fix much like our low coolant problem but are learned up to put a 1 cent broad headed nail in the right place think you're a dawg gone wonder. Not to be confused with a gone to the dawg wonder.
