Default Old pics from Hudson steering on Old Rusty.

Edit: I thought I was posting this on the hamb! Whoops! I'll leave it here, though, to save rewriting all the links. This was all well over 20 years ago.

I had a request for info on the Hudson steering installation on Old Rusty. My old web site is long gone, but I have found some pictures. They are small because this was from the days of dial up!

Pic 1 is the Hudson steering box as received showing the 32 pitman arm fitted.


Pic 2 is the steering box being turned down on the old Hendey lathe.


Pic 3 shows the box in place and working on the new flange.


Pic 4 shows The box mocked in place showing the tight fit with the starter.


Pic 5 shows the new flange welded onto the box.


Pic 6 shows the finished box in place you might be able to see a countersunk screw in one location to gain clearance.


And finally Pic 7 shows a general view of the box in place.


I have to say NealinCA is the expert on this conversion and some Nash and Plymouth boxes are also possible candidates. I imagine there may be others too. The f1 box is also converted in a similar way, but is underslung.

Hope the above may prove helpful and maybe interesting to some.

Brilliant, thanks very much Mart for the effort to repost something from 20 birthdays ago .do you remember what you used to weld the new flange onto the sector shaft housing, being dissimilar metals? I didn’t realise there was potential starter interference, I assume putting the new flange on addressed that issue. Of course 20 years ago the smaller gear reduction starters were probably not available. Might have get my 4 jaw chuck out. So it appears you may have also turned the mast diameter down ?

For the LHD, there is minor interference with the back edge and bottom bolt with the exhaust. I replaced the hex heads with button head Allen bolts.

Hi Kiwi. The mast is bigger on the Hudson, so yes, that had to be turned down. As a RHD, starter clearance was a problem. I had to push the box out a bit further than I would had it been a LHD. As you can put the flange anywhere you like, within reason, you can get it to just miss the starter. Then you have to bend the pedals to clear the column mast. A very narrow accelerator pedal is also required. Bodies other than model A might have more room. I just used my mig welder. It probably isn't the best way, but it did work for me. I think I pre heated the parts before welding.

I just followed your excellent lead Mart! I think I did my first Hudson conversion back in 2007/2008, so better than 15 years ago. Thank you for the refresh on these old pics and info.
