Model A as Regular Car in Massachusetts
Group,
I'm considering a move to Massachusetts and wonder if anyone has any experience with registering my Model A as a regular car and not as an antique. The reason is to be able to drive the car on other days than Sunday and Parades. Marc |

Re: Model A as Regular Car in Massachusetts
MA allows the Model A to be registered with a regular plate. Really no big deal.
I understand your reason for wanting the regular plate but just for info you also can register it with antique plates or year of manufacture. |

Re: Model A as Regular Car in Massachusetts
This is the from the mass rmv affidavit you must sign for antique / year of manufacturer plates.
"......and will be maintained and operated solely for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades and other functions of public interest (including test drives to prepare for such functions and transportation to and from repair facilities) and will not be used primarily for the transportation of passengers or goods over any way." Yeah, it's no big deal here, just obviously more expensive.

I think all the states allow them to be registered as a regular motor vehicle.

But when you do so, make sure it is not insured as an antique and is insured as a regular driver. Wayne

Re: Model A as Regular Car in Massachusetts
I had regular plates on the roadster I sold, they were cheaper than antique plates and only had to be renewed every 2 years. I didn't have to sign any affidavits limiting mileage. I had Hagerty insurance on the car and it was quite reasonable with no restrictions that I'm aware of. The car did have to be Mass. inspected once a year by any local garage.

Cars with YOM or Antique plates have to go for inspection every year also. |

Re: Model A as Regular Car in Massachusetts
You will have to have the car appraised ($300, approx.) by an appraiser approved by the insurance company. When I inquired about getting an appraisal, I found that there are very few appraisers – the closest one to me was about 60 miles away. There are additional charges if they have to come to you. The car is then insured the same as any modern car.
P.S. Are you certain you want to move to here? |

Re: Model A as Regular Car in Massachusetts
First you go to an insurance agency that deals in antique car insurance and fill out a RMV form, they send 2 pictures of the car to Grundy or Haggerty or others, once it's insured they go to the registry for you, pay the fees for plates and title and you pick up your plates at the insurance agency. Very simple and no affidavits to sign unless you go for antique registration which is more costly and must be renewed annually and restricted driving.
No restrictions on driving with a regular plate but that would depend on the insurance carrier. I've never had restrictions from Haggerty or Grundy. |

Thanks for the info.
With regard to why I would move to Massachusetts, well that's because I have a chance to live on Cape Cod. Marc |

Re: Model A as Regular Car in Massachusetts
I would never put Nebraska's antique car plates on my A. The law is written to only allow you to drive it 500 miles a year. If you only plan to drive it under 500 miles a year then I see no need to own an A. Other states laws vary so this is just my opinion of the law here. Rod

Lucky guy but tough to get over the bridges in the summer. A lot warmer climate than Minnesota though. I forgot to mention if your car is registered in Mn bring your current registration paper and title and you shouldn't need to pay Ma sales tax.

I lived on the Cape for three years while I was in the Air Force. I completely understand the appeal. However, you may find that the salt air is a new experience when you are trying to stay ahead of rust.
