Default Shop Envy

"You can tell a lot about a man by his work area".

Lately due to a full-time work schedule and personal illness I haven't had much time to work or play with my Tudor in the garage. Thus the place has become a mess and will require a full cleaning and reorganization before any further work is done to Old Betty.

Some of the posts of members cars in their shops have me embarrassed and ashamed that I don't have a cleaner or larger work space.

Resulting in Shop Envy!

So I swallow my pride to post this pic of my woeful conditions and ask others to post where they shelter their cars and their pride.

It's not the shop you work in, it's the work you accomplish. I have seen some amazing work from humble shops.

I don't have a dog in my work area. That puts you way ahead. Good to have one around to scratch behind the ears while you figure out what isn't quite going together right.

Probably, the most of us work in cramped quarters or outside, under the "shadetree".

Another view of my shop. I had the bullet holes welded and the body work done on the roadster body shell here. The first coats of lacquer are curing. I did the running gear next..

Lance , It looks like you have plenty of space there!!!

Maybe with some shelves you could organise it better .

Watch out though " My wife say's that the Junk grows to the size of the Shed, Barn or Garage no matter how big it is !!!"

In 26 years I haven't been able to prove her wrong either.

Be thankful for what you got! I rebuilt several old cars outside on a gravel and mud driveway in freezing weather and/or blistering hot heat when I was younger because that was only place I had to work. Bought my house for the full basement and cement floor and was in "heaven".

Lance,
Hope you get feelin' better, it's hell when you're sick & still have to work. Shop looks good, after all, we don't need to put on a 'SHOW." Dogs are a MUST! You can tell a lot about a MAN by studyin' his dog, or you can tell a lot about a Dog by studyin' his MAN! Like, WILL HE BITE! Buster T. Brown means as much to me as Vermin, my Model A does! Well, pain pill has kicked in, gotta' go to the galley & cook. Have a good day, ALL. Bill W.

The other end of one of my storage buildings. I built these buildings after retirement, before that it was all outside and most mechanic work was done under a shade tree.

I certainly appreciate what I have and know that if I had more space it would only result in more clutter.
Storing the chassis below the body when I'm not working on it is a must for added space and to keep it out of the weather. Grinded it clean and ready for paint just before getting sick (not serious though) The current project schedule is for me to get the chassis finished before the engine comes back in late Nov. Belief being that the safest place to store it is where it was built to be. And yes a dog is a mans best friend, that is until she tears off chasing the occasional walkers in the neighborhood. Otherwise she's a good dog and can't wait to ride around in her Model A.

I specialize in Mustangs, but I'm open to other vehicles if the mood so hits me All I have to say it no. But, I've been doing a run of Firebirds lately. The older I get the more I'm interested in trying something I haven't done before. Keeps me interested.
I am so looking forward to the new shop, but I will not be moving in until next year.

Hey William, yours is the type of shop that I envy. I will find some solace by believing that this is the picure you took after hours of cleaning.

My shop is only 16' wide and 40' long, due to limitations with my lot. I did install a 2-pole Direct Lift, don't know how I ever got along without one and gave my 30 year old car ramps away last week.

I had wasted space above the garage door, so I installed a 16'X10' loft for storage. This weekend, I installed a 45K BTU natural gas heater. Have 20' more of 3/4" pipe to install, wire the thermostat, and run the exhaust duct through the wall.

The limited space does cause some inconvenience with juggling the cars around.

Your fine... I don't think anything in that garage is owned by my neighbor My stuff has been in there 7 years. She is a single mom that has no interest in using it. In return I do the lawn mowing, snow plowing and tree trimming.

My "garage/workarea" is the 3rd stall of the garage that is an extra 12' deep. When the house was built I planned for indoor storage for my boat w/trailer. After I changed to a larger boat that won't fit in this garage I had to fill it with someting so the speedster is there and the 66 Lemans convert is under cover, Sometimes my projects infringe on my wife's parking spot when she's not there. Not ideal but it works for me. I do have a dedicated workshop in the basement.

This is my "shop", for now.
I'm building 30' x 30' earth sheltered shop with a pit at my retirement home in the high-desert. Earth-sheltered to try and mitigate the temperature swings (it goes from below freezing to 120+ up there) and a pit instead of a lift becuase building a cave that tall is way too expensive.. think pit like they have at Jiffy lube.. enough room to store stuff (like the doghouse couch and Big screen)

This is the garage that was all I had in 1961. Pulled engines in the doorway with the rear of the car hanging out in the weather. Rain and snow. built a car show winner in it. It was all I had for 20 years. It's about the desire not not the shop. But it's much more fun in my new shop. Norm

Ha, i like the look too, but the space is challenging. Guess its what i get for living in an histroric neighborhood. Not complaining though, knowing a workshop is in the future.

It is an old still that I restored, which when kept a quarter full w/water over a fire works great as a humidifier. We use a wood stove for heat and this let's us keep it from drying out the air to much, keeping wood wheels and other parts from drying out to much over the winter.

When the stove is really roaring in the winter, the water in it is boiling most of the time and steam pours out of the spouts. Been using it now for four years and it works great!!

Are you sure you work in this shop? It looks awful clean and organized. We keep an old kettle on the stove on the farm for the same reason.

Trailers! Are you kidding me? When we started selling trailers at Old Evangeline Downs, the total quanity of inventory was over 22,000 FEMA travel trailers, Park homes and Mobile homes. We just sold another 224 units last Saturday. The bids were lower than in past sales. I guess average winning bid was around $2,400 for a 32' travel trailer. We dont have another LIVE trailer auction sceduled for Lafayette/Carencro yet but we have an Online (timed) trailer auction sceduled for Nov. 13 (Inspection is in Denham Springs LA) as well as one going on right now (Oct.31) closing in the morning at 9am. www.hendersonauctions.com
We dont have many left, less than 1,800 which may sound like a lot but some have serious damage.
Red Stick Model A club has a tour this Saturday leaving from Baton Rouge headed to Houma for the AACA Fall Fun Day http://local.aaca.org/louisiana/lagn...on%20Flyer.pdf
Hope we make it back for LSU vs BAMA

Working on a deal to maybe get this building for a new shop. I may have to purchase it but feel it is a good investment. Old Pure oil filling station. The building is structurally sound but needs electrical work.

I have been working in the detached garage at my house. Gravel driveway and wishing I had a cement pad in front of my garage so I could pull engines somewhere other than just inside the garage. I have built a lot of storage/work spaces. A work bench on one side, shelving in the back and another bench on the right hand side. I am having difficulty with the back left corner...too many things in such a small space! I am working on an overhang on the backside of the garage. Taking a break for the weather and ended up with a fence post dropping on my head and a trip to the emergency room!

Here are some photos over the course of my Model A disease of my garage and the different transformations it has taken.

EEEEK!

I like the hanging of bikes from the ceiling, up and out of the way. If I do were to do that I'll also bet that is where they will stay until they bury me. Also open selves and cabinets work for me. Out of site out of mind to me means "I forgot where I put it!"

Looks like a lot of work, but it's a good start.
I wonder just what might have been left up in the loft. I know of a man, in West Virginia, who bought a building, like that, back in the 60s, and the loft was loaded with NOS fenders, of all makes.

Ok I'll bite. First of all ^ James Rogers, that is very cool! You see potential in the old building that just speaks volumes about what we do, preserving some history and character. I'm sure it will be advertising just by itself when completed. Many people would see the simple solution to just buy the lot, knock the old building down and put a metal sided pole barn in its place (probably cheaper, easier but lacking any character) I'm much more excited about the potential of the old building and what it will look like when you have it fixed up and setup.

As for my own humble setup I just have a 1.75 car garage. I call it that because with the furnace, water heater, and door steps in the left stall you can only fit a very small, short car. My model A fits the bill but you can forget about a modern vehicle of any size bigger than a compact to midsize sedan. My honda civic I recently traded off fit within inches lengthwise. We now have a new Honda CRV that will hopefully reside on the right side and my pickup will stay outside. I can squeeze my F150 in the right side within inches lengthwise yet width is a serious issue with two vehicles inside. Its a tight squeeze!

I spent the last year tearing apart my Model A and doing brakes, suspension, rear end and transmission work etc and my wife was (fortunately) a pretty good sport about parking outside since the Model A took over the whole garage in the process. I also hung some plastic to repaint my rear end and transmission parts. I am envious of people with a lift of any sort, people with air tools, paint guns, paint booths etc. I guess you gotta start somewhere and its not like I'm laying in the dirt either so I do have much to be thankful for.

I really want to slap the builder for not making my garage 3 ft deeper and 3ft wider! I guess modern suburbia doesn't have a need for a garage as we used to know it. Most of my neighbors use theirs just to dump their tons of junk and cardboard boxes etc. Nobody parks inside or uses it for a useful workspace anymore.

Looks like a neat nostalgic place. Around here, former service stations don't sell due to the liability of ground contamination. Supposedly, most have or could have had tanks leak requiring certified companies to excavate and remove soil to hazardous waste sites. Unbelievably costly.

looks pretty sweet, James. your current shop is not chopped liver, but I know you'd like to be able to park your own cars inside again for a change. PM the address to me so I can do a drive-by!

Like the idea of large storage bins under the counter space.

Remember the days of nailing mayonaise jar lids to the underside of shelves, and storing misc. hardware in the jars. As a kid, I thought my Dad was the smartest Dad around when I understood why he was saving those old jars.

Here is an inside view of my shop. I'm mixing Feather fill primer in the background. I installed a 42 inch attic fan in the back wall for an exhaust fan. I built bifolding doors to cover the opening when the fan is not in use.

First thing I did when we had my son last summer is steal the empty baby food jars and screw the lids to the rafters of my shed for little screw and nut storage.

Steve it's time for one of those new and improved soup can phones because I am pretty sure that first picture is of an early John Deere prototype.

Here is my shop.I have spent a lot of good time here. It was first a small engine repair shop . Then I started restoring British Triumph motorcycles and Harleys. Now it is model A and T. There will be an A V8 traditional hot rod next. I keep busy since I retired from farming.

ok, I have two different sets of pictures for georges post #71. one set of pics as viewed using my phone, with the first picture is outside an easy up, with what appears to be a small stationary steam engine, but I can't enlarge the picture. On my PC i see a completely different set of pictures inside the shop. No outside picture, this is too weird....

it's the American way, it seems...... keep $1500 (or less) worth of jumbled crap and dumpster fodder in your garage and park your $30,000 motorcar outdoors.

builders are competing to put out the glitziest product thay can at the lowest cost. only us car guys and maybe motorcyclists and hobby woodworkers give the garage a second look when buying a home.

Having outside workspace, no matter how nice your shop is, is very important to me as well. When weather permits, I do a lot of work outside. So a carport, awning or whatever giving some protection outside is a great thing. Plus, I like the way it looks as well.

As for how builders go and the desire of the U.S. home buyer, I have only one comment.
"Building codes should make installing 220 in all garages mandatory"!

I agree. I can't believe how people go cheap when it only cost a little more to have outlets where needed, proper lighting, and 220. Outlets on the outside of the house and garage should also be code.

My house was built in the early 50's and they didn't even put in grounded outlets, and still used the old screw in fuse box. Cheap, cheap, cheap!

We are building a new house this year on 10 acres and luckily I got my shop built first earlier in the year. Can't wait to get my A's and shop equipment moved in. It ended up being 100' x 40' with a 20' x 30' wing. Upstairs has a 40' x 40' loft with full ceiling height for my man cave.

The other part has 20' ceilings for a lift and car racks, and wash bay.

Wow what a shop. I'd be content with the 25 x 30 wing.

Tom, in the early 50's the electrical installation you describe was maybe not "state of the art" but it was definitely "normal" and "typical".

road king;

I don't think you need to be told that you have an incredible new shop.
I would be interested in seeing the house your building when its complete.

As for the shop I can only imagine how long it would take someone like myself to fill 4000+ sq. ft. with all the items/junk that I'd only use once or never at all.

Thank you, I'm sure I'll have it filled with old rusty junk pretty quick..

Here's the house of this weekend... I joke that it's my wife's house and mine is the shop!

easy fix. add a second 220 circuit.
if I forced myself to settle for the original wiring in my home & garage, I would not be pleased......

Not as easy as it would seem, Panel is over loaded now, it would require a second panel. When I built a pool I looked at adding it then but electrician said that due to the placement of my service and the location of my garage/shop I would be looking at a significant investment.

ok, I stand corrected. not a really easy fix. but still fixable.

when I was in the home repair & restoration business, customers would ask
"can you do __________ ? "
my answer was always "YES".
my follow-up question was what actually made or broke the project:
"are you willing to endure the expense and inconvenience it will involve?"

This is my "home away from home" (though home is only 100 feet away). It is 42' X 80' and is stick built on a foundation. The first 24' has a 24' X 28' main shop with lift and a separate 24' X 14' Dirty Room where sanding, painting, etc. is done. These are heated whereas the rest is for storage. The irony is after building it and the house my wife says it should have been 100' long. That meant she wanted twenty more feet than she's already encroached on. I do come to the realization that the more you have the more you fill which for me means more work.

Claude built Marge a "hobby" building from old barn wood & it was really neat, looked like it was 107 years old. Her specs were: lots of plugs, good lights, and NO door large enough to let a STRAY car in! Claude "thinks" he has 8 out buildings------???????? Bill W.

Here is a view of my home shop. My house in the background to the left. I built them. I built the shop in 95 and sided it with rough sawn cedar. The shop is small but it is easy to cool and I really don't need heat. If it gets too cold I just stay in the house and look at the computer or some such.

You've got the "coolest" place! Some day I'd like to make a trip to Alabama just to see it all. I spent 6 months in Huntsville while in the Army, and sure liked it there, even though it was very hot and humid.

Thanks Tom, You are welcome to visit any time. I'm about 100 miles from the bay . It gets real hot and humid in the summer. The coldest days of winter it is a damp cold. We are having nice fall days now. The highs are in the sixties .
